Continental silver sterling imitation of a Medieval Edwardian type penny. This is a 'crockard' with a crown of rosettes on the bust, issued by John I (1261-1294), Duke of Brabant, a duchy of the Holy Roman Empire between 1183-1648 covering parts of the Netherlands and Belgium, probably Brussels mint. Mayhew Type 40bc (with reversed 'N' and the obverse legend with punctuation of small saltires +:I:DUX.BRABANTIE)

Continental silver sterling imitation of a Medieval Edwardian type penny. This is a 'crockard', struck by John I, Duke of Brabant and Limburg, between 1267 and 1294. Mayhew number 43. The obverse shows a crowned bust facing, possibly wearing a chaplet of roses, inscribed [DVX BRA]BANTI[E]. The reverse has a long cross pattee dividing the legend with three pellets in each angle, inscribed [I DV]X LIMB[VRGIE]. The coin was brought to the PAS held together with sticky tape, and consists of two fragments constituting around five sixths of the coin.

These coins imitated voided long-cross pennies, and date to AD1270 - 1280 and precede the common sterling imitations made during the reign of Edward I. Identification kindly suggested by the finder.
