A Post-Medieval copper-alloy Irish 'gun money' halfcrown of James II (AD 1685-1688), dated August 1690. Mint of Dublin. Dimensions: diameter: 32.61mm; weigh: 17.00g.  These coins were minted during the Williamite War in Ireland (AD 1689-1691) and were to be redeemed for silver coinage after the war. A complete copper alloy Irish 'Gun Money' Halfcrown of James II (AD 1685-88) dating to AD 1689. Reverse depicts crown over sceptres, dividing J R, XXX above and Oct (October) below. Diameter: 32.34m, Thickness: 2.37mm, Weight: 13.5g Spink (2002:169), no.6579. These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James attempted to recover the English throne and were ultimately intended to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value. They were made from old cannon, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt, and the coins were never exchanged.

This denomination was minted in silver, however this example is copper alloy with a large amount of retained silver coating. An extremely worn post-medieval white metal contemporary forgery of a half crown of William III (1694-1702).  Obverse: laureate bust right; legend [GVLIEL]MVS.[ III. DEI. GRA]. Reverse: illegible.  Measurements: diameter 33.45mm, thickness 1.81mm, weight 9.00g. This example is the right size but is lighter than the official issues of around 15g, a trait often seen on forgeries of the period.  Other examples of contemporary half crown William III forgeries recorded on the PAS database include: WAW-0DF698 and SUSS-9941E6.
