A Post-Medieval French copper alloy coin: double tournois of Louis XIII (AD 1610-1643). Barrie Cook, The British Museum, states that it is stylistically a little unusual, however, there were lots of contemporary counterfeits of the French copper coinage at this time, and it can be hard to be sure on worn specimens. The left-facing bust is not usual, but did appear on some issues at the end of the reign, so it could belong to the 1640s.

German silver religious medallion, made for protection against plague (Pesttaler). It has verses from Numbers and St John on each side. It would have had an attachment loop at the top which has now broken off. The devices are Old- and equated New-Tesament types. Many different types of these medals survive, some of which have various 16th-century dates whilst others are not dated. This one most likely dates to the 16th century.

A coin of Louis XIV of France. Edward Besly of the National Museum and Gallery of Wales has identified this coin as follows. Louis XIV's coinage suffered a succession of remintings in this period, known as 'réformations' and most of the time, ratther than melting down the coins, they struck the new ones directly on the old. This is therefore a réformation: A 1691 'Quadruple sol aux deux Ls', which has been overstruck c.1702-4 to become a a 'cinq sols aux insignes'. The date of the earlier coin is under the King's bust, which is upside-down in relation to the new design. On th…

An incomplete copper alloy coin of Philip IV of Spain (1621-65), revalidated to 8 maravedis. Probably issued 1624, although not certain as the date is situated to the right side of the shield on the reverse which is illegible due to corrosion. A similar, though smaller type was issued in 1625 and 1626. In the 1630s – 1650s period these coins were countermarked to revalidate them. The countermark usually consisted of a figure 8, or VIII in a small circle and sometimes a second mark, which gave the date. This coin has a letter B below the VIII, which would seem to indicate that …

A post medieval copper alloy coin from India. Shailendra Bhandare of the Ashmolean Museum writes: 'The coin is a Paisa of Gwalior State, Gwalior Fort mint, struck in the name of the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Akbar II, during the reign of Maharaja Daulat Rao Scindia (1796-1825). Details of date etc are not seen due to the poor condition of the coin.' The coin has a diameter of 16.6mm and is 5.5mm thick. It weighs 8.6g. It is fairly common to find Indian coins in Britain, probably because they were brought here by people serving in the Empire in India.

Silver 8 real of Philip II of Spain dating to 1556-98. The flan is irregular in shape and is fairly thick. Due to the irregularity of the flan shape most of the legend is missing. In the mid-16th century major silver deposits were found in South America, in 'Peru'. This relates to an area much larger than modern day Peru. Coins minted from here were called 'cobs' (cabo)- rather than producing a nice flan onto which the image was struck, cobs were simply a bar of silver cut into appropriate weights (2, 4, 8 reals) and they are obviously of odd, irregular shapes. This coin was most l…

Copper alloy coin weight. The weight is square, flat and decorated. The weight is for either an excelente (c.3.5g) or double excelente (c.7g) of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, the coin type introduced in 1497 (excelentes were usually known as ducats, since they shared their standards). The weight is probably English, as it resembles a version in the Withers' little pamphlet Lions, Ships and Angels (p.30), but they don't include it in the big British Coin Weights book. These weights can be as much as 100 years later than the original coin, but it is probably 16th century.
