Copper alloy Tournai Jetton, probably dating to the late medieval / early post medieval period 1497-1547. Both faces of the coin are encrusted with a concreted amalgam of earth and grit which cannot be removed. It is likely that this crust is a by-product of corrosion. The edges of the coin have also been badly abraded; this has removed some of the inscription around the edge of the token. Reference: Mitchener: 749 pp 242-244

Copper alloy French jetton or reckoning counter, depicting the shield of France on the obverse, which dates it to c.1415-1437, struck in Tournai, probably after 1423 when King Charles VII of France (1422-1461) introduced the silver Blanc à la coronelle (coin). Mitchener (1988) illustrates a similar example on page 227, No.688. Jettons first appeared in England during the reign of Edward I (1271-1307) and carried on to the end of the reign of Richard II (1377-1399). Copper alloy French 'stock'jetton probably from Tournai dated to the later medieval period (1400 - 1550). The jetton has been heavily abraded and almost all detail has been lost. It has also been pierced from the obverse to reverse with a square shaped punch. The waste material around the hole has been trimmed and the hole filed to remove sharp edges. The hole is slightlly irregular suggesting that it has been suspended / worn.
