This is a Scottish hammered silver twenty pence of Charles I (1625-49). As an example of the third (Falconer) Scottish coinage issue, the date may be refined to 1637-1642. The obverse has the crowned bust left with 'xx' in the field behind the bust and a pellet on the inner circle. The reverse has a crown over a thistle. The coin is in very poor condition with a small square section piercing through the bust with two radial cracks from that point. The rim is further degraded by clipping and split at the 08:30 position.

It is counterstamped VIII with a small H or M above and the second and third II appear to be interupted by a circular counterstamp. It is probably a 8 maravedis of Felipe III (1598-1621) of Spain, but countermarked later under Felipe IV's reign (1621-1665) as an 8 maravedis 'resellado' which means 'resealed' or 'restruck'.
