A copper alloy artefact, probably a coin of Medieval or Post Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1500, probably of the Crusader Kingdom of Cyprus, maybe of James II dating from the late 15th century. One face bears a cross potent with a cross in each angle (the Jerusulem cross). The peripheral legend is illegible. The other face is possibly a rampant lion. The legend is again illegible, but may end GRAIA which would fit with a sizin such as that of James II (the Bastard), AD 1463 - 1473. The coin is 18.3mm in diameter and 1.4mm thick. It weighs 1.9g.

British Museum Curatorial Report:
"I have examined an object reported found at "Darrington", West Yorkshire. The object is a piedfort or piéfort version of the coin-type known as the denier of the counts of Blois-Chartres. The reference to the coin is J. Duplessy, Les monnaies françaises féodales (2004) no. 585. This was the last of the anonymous Blois denier series (coins that do not name an individual count) and the only one of them for which there are known examples of piedforts, as several of this type have been recorded. The coin is anonymous, with a highly stylised obverse …

In 1469, following an agreement made between Edward IV and Charles the Bold, these coins were made legal tender in England and remained so for over 60 years afterwards; they crop up in hoards (in steadily declining numbers) until well into Henry VIII's reign. The Burgundian rulers were seen as friends of the English and this is the main reason that this type of foreign coin was allowed to circulate here. The metal is not quite sterling value, s…
