A French silver coin; probably a cinquieme d'ecu (fifth of an ecu?) which is extremely worn. It may be a coin of Louis XV dating from c.1726. Hardly any of the design is legible. It has a diameter of 26.56mm, thickness 0.89mm, weight 4.48g.

It may possibly be French to weigh the Royal d'or of Charles VII of France c. 1423-1474. It is 15.8mm long, 15.5mm wide and 2.3mm thick. It weighs 3.44gm. An incomplete silver Continental Sterling imitation coin dating from the late 13th – 14th century, and showing a crowned bust. These coins were struck on the continent by many different rulers, to imitate English pennies. It is probably Mayhew number 265 (Withers forthcoming). It has a diameter of 19.41mm, a thickness of 0.62mm and a weight of 0.79g.

A square, uniface, medieval, copper-alloy coin weight for the French ecu, c. 1422-1475. It depicts a crowned shield containing three fleurs-de-lis, flanked by the letter H on each side, all within a beaded circle. Weights of this type with initials flanking the shield are known to be of French manufacture. It is 15.3mm long, 14.4mm wide, and 2mm thick. It weighs 2.53gm. A post medieval French coin; a silver 15 sol piece of Louis XVI. The 15 sol denomination seems only to have been minted under Louis XVI in 1791 – 1793, in the years immediately before France became a republic. The obverse legend should read “LOUIS XVI ROI – DES FRANCOIS” and the date, round a bust of Louis XVI facing left, and on the reverse, “15 SOL” across the field with the legend “REGNE DE LA LOI” above and “L’AN DE LA LIBERTE” on two lines beneath (meaning “the rule of the law” and “the year of Liberty”. A medieval silver coin; a double petard of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, Count of Flanders (1467 – 1477). It was minted in 1467 – 1474. The coin is hardly clipped but it quite worn. It has a diameter of 26.1mm and is 0.5mm thick. It weighs 2.6g. Silver double patards of the dukes of Burgandy, from their territories of Brabant and Flanders, were made legally current in England as equal to groats (i.e. fourpence) in a convention of 1469 between Edward IV and Charles the Bold. A post medieval copper alloy coin from India. Shailendra Bhandare of the Ashmolean Museum writes: 'The coin is a Paisa of Gwalior State, Gwalior Fort mint, struck in the name of the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Akbar II, during the reign of Maharaja Daulat Rao Scindia (1796-1825). Details of date etc are not seen due to the poor condition of the coin.' The coin has a diameter of 16.6mm and is 5.5mm thick. It weighs 8.6g. It is fairly common to find Indian coins in Britain, probably because they were brought here by people serving in the Empire in India.
