A late medieval copper alloy English Jetton that has been reused as a brooch or dress fitting. A lozenge shaped plate of copper alloy has been riveted to the centre of the reverse of the jetton, allowing to be used as a hooked tag. Both ends of the plate are pointed and curled over to form a hook; one end is curled beneath and the other to the front. This reworked jetton fits with the well known tradition of converting coins into jewellery in the 13th and 14th centuries. Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy coin weight. The weight is square, flat and decorated.
The weight is for either an excelente (c.3.5g) or double excelente (c.7g) of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, the coin type introduced in 1497 (excelentes were usually known as ducats, since they shared their standards). The weight is probably English, as it resembles a version in the Withers' little pamphlet Lions, Ships and Angels (p.30), but they don't include it in the big British Coin Weights book. These weights can be as much as 100 years later than the original coin, but it is probably 16th century.

A copper alloy Nuremberg jetton, Rechenmeister type, with the alphabet on the reverse. The jetton has a diameter of 28mm and is 1mm thick. It depicts a Rechenmeister using jettons at a counting table on the obverse. The jetton is pierced. The reverse inscription is very worn but it is similar to Michener (Volume 1) number 1430. It probably dates from 1580 to 1600.
