Silver foreign groat This is a silver double patard: Flanders, Charles the Rash of Burgundy (1467-77), struck at Bruges, 1467-74, mint-mark fleur-de-lys in centre of reverse. Ref: H Enno Van Gelder and M. Hoc, Les Monnaies des Pays-Bas Bourguignons et Espagnols 1434-1713 (Amsterdam 1960), p.20, no.23-3. These were the exact equivalent of the contemporary English groat (slightly heavier, but slightly baser silver) and were made legal tender in England and Wales in 1469 [from memory]. They turn up singly all over the place and in hoards down to the 1530s.

A medieval Scottish silver penny of Alexander III (1249 - 1286), possibly a first coinage long cross and stars penny of type VII (1250 - c.1280). The coin is very worn and is not complete, as all the legend has been removed and the edges have been thickened by hammering. It measures 15.8 by 1.6mm and weighs 1.29g. It depicts a crowned shield containing three fleurs-de-lis, flanked by the letter H on each side, all within a beaded circle. Weights of this type with initials flanking the shield are known to be of French manufacture. It is 15.3mm long, 14.4mm wide, and 2mm thick. It weighs 2.53gm. This is a Scottish hammered silver penny of Alexander III (1249-1286). This example is from the first coinage with a voided long cross on the reverse. The cross has a central pellet and a star to each quadrant. The obverse has the crowned profile bust of King facing left and holding a sceptre.
