A copper alloy artefact, probably a coin of Medieval or Post Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1500, probably of the Crusader Kingdom of Cyprus, maybe of James II dating from the late 15th century. One face bears a cross potent with a cross in each angle (the Jerusulem cross). The peripheral legend is illegible. The other face is possibly a rampant lion. The legend is again illegible, but may end GRAIA which would fit with a sizin such as that of James II (the Bastard), AD 1463 - 1473. The coin is 18.3mm in diameter and 1.4mm thick. It weighs 1.9g. A medieval Scottish silver penny of Alexander III (1249 - 1286), possibly a first coinage long cross and stars penny of type VII (1250 - c.1280). The coin is very worn and is not complete, as all the legend has been removed and the edges have been thickened by hammering. It measures 15.8 by 1.6mm and weighs 1.29g. These measurements are unusual and it may be that this is a contemporary forgery. For reference see Seaby 5047. This coin recorded from a photograph.

Very worn cu-alloy Nuremberg jetton dating from the later 16th century. The inscription is illegible, but it probably was a token of Hans Krauwinkel or Hans Schultes (I or II) which date to the mid 16th/later 16th century.

This is a Scottish hammered silver penny of Alexander III (1249-1286). This example is from the first coinage with a voided long cross on the reverse. The cross has a central pellet and a star to each quadrant. The obverse has the crowned profile bust of King facing left and holding a sceptre. The reverse legend is indistinct but is most likely to indicate that the moneyer is Tomas at Aberdeen. Overall, the coin is in poor condition with a damaged lower edge when viewed on the obverse.

Silver Brabant Long Cross single-lion sterling, 'Walt' type (Class 1c) - Mayhew 1983, page 13. These 'brabantini' date to the 1270s and 1280's (during the reign of King John) and preceed the common sterling imitations contemporary with the reign of Edward I. Sincere thanks are extended to Dr. Dot Boughton and Mr. Robert Webley for their identification and comments.

This coin was minted at the famous Potosi silver mine in Bolivia, one of several New World mints set up by the Spanish. Because the Spanish Real was a very stable unit of currency, the coins were used all over the known world. The obverse shows symbols of Spain: a cross with a castle in the top left and bottom right, and a lion in the top right and bottom left. On the reverse are two pillars, symbolising …
