A medieval silver coin: a Anglo-Gallic hardi d'argent, probably Edward the Black Prince as Prince of Aquitaine, issued AD 1362 - 1371, Elias 208 (no mint letter at end of ovberse inscription. Ref: Elias 1984, 190-1. The coin is damaged, being slightly clipped and having a section of the edge missing between 12 and 4 o'clock on the obverse. It is 19.4mm long, 16.4mm wide and 0.6mm thick. It weighs 0.86gm.

The object is a piedfort or piéfort version of the coin-type known as the denier of the counts of Blois-Chartres. The reference to the coin is J. A complete silver half-tostao of Philip III (1621-40) = Philip IV of Spain as King of Portugal. It has been countermarked to a new valuation of 60 reis under Joao (John) IV (1640-56) following restoration of Portugal's independence. Under the Regulation and Law of February 1 and 3, 1641, half-tostaos were among the species revalued, at 60 reis. The weight is also correct for this denomination. An imitation of a tetarteron of Alexios I (1081-1118), post-reform (1092) of the mint of Constantinople. Reference for the real issue (and not this imitation) can be found in Dumbarton Oaks Coins vol 4, no 33. Julian Baker of the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford) indicated that it was a good imitation, though the style was not quite right, and the coin itself is too round and not irregular enough to be an official issue of the era. That said, it is probably contemporary as these have very little collector's value, unless made as a tourist trinket in more recent centuries.

Part of a clipped medieval silver penny, probably an Irish issue of Richard III or Henry VII (1483 – 1509). Little of the legends survive. The crown is tall with a central fleur and bifoliate side fleurs. There appear to be symbols on the king’s shoulders, though these are not clear.
