A copper alloy fals, possibly of Salah Al-Din (AD 1187-1193) of the Ayyubid dynasty (AD 1187-1244), of Egypt and Syria. Better known in the West as Saladin, he led a number of campaigns against the Crusaders and recaptured Jerusalem in AD 1187. The inscriptions on this coin are in poor condition, but the Assistant Curator of Islamic Coins of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, believes that part of the inscription may read SAID / SALA, and is likely to date from the reign of Saladin.
