A coin of Louis XIV of France. Edward Besly of the National Museum and Gallery of Wales has identified this coin as follows. Louis XIV's coinage suffered a succession of remintings in this period, known as 'réformations' and most of the time, ratther than melting down the coins, they struck the new ones directly on the old. This is therefore a réformation: A 1691 'Quadruple sol aux deux Ls', which has been overstruck c.1702-4 to become a a 'cinq sols aux insignes'. A silver 4 sols coin of Louis the XIV (1643-1715) of France. The reverse shows the monogram of Louis the XIV - crossed florid L's with a crown above and three fleur d'lis, this is the later form of reverse for this coin used during his reign.

A worn, incomplete and slightly bent 17th-century silver post-medieval 4 sols piece of Louis XIV dated 1677 AD. This coin has been pierced through the centre of the reverse face. The piercing means that the mint mark is difficult to discern, but it is likely to be a 'D', representing Lyon (cf. Krause & Mishler 2003 (17th century, 3rd edition), 218; KM# 232.2).
