Edward Besly of the National Museum and Gallery of Wales has identified this coin as follows.
Louis XIV's coinage suffered a succession of remintings in this period, known as 'réformations' and most of the time, ratther than melting down the coins, they struck the new ones directly on the old.
This is therefore a réformation:
A 1691 'Quadruple sol aux deux Ls', which has been overstruck c.1702-4 to become a a 'cinq sols aux insignes'.
The date of the earlier coin is under the King's bust, which is upside-down in relation to the new design. On th…

The mint director's privy mark (a laurel crown or wreath) visible above the obverse bust suggests that this coin was struck at the central, Parisian mint during the tenure of Jean Hindret (Krause & Mishler 2003 (17th century, 3rd edition), 209, 218). The date on the reverse which is otherwise obscured, presumably due to an imperfection in the die, can therefore be confirmed as 1675.

The practice of bending coins out of shape and smoothing the coins surface and presenting them to others as a gesture of love was common from the late 17th century until the 19th century. They were often engraved with symbols of love or the initials of the sender and recipient.
