Four coins reported found on the site of a previous find of similar coins. These coins are all gold doblas of Peter or Pedro I, King of Castile ('Pedro the Cruel'), who reigned 1350-69. All the coins were struck at the Seville mint, the main mint of Castile. They are of good weight and are in generally good condition, with slight indications of wear, so they have seen some currency. In my report on the previous coins found on the site (December 2005), I made the following comments: 'Gold coins of the 14th century are not frequent finds. We do know from documentary sources that for…

Copper alloy coin weight. The weight is square, flat and decorated. The weight is for either an excelente (c.3.5g) or double excelente (c.7g) of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, the coin type introduced in 1497 (excelentes were usually known as ducats, since they shared their standards). The weight is probably English, as it resembles a version in the Withers' little pamphlet Lions, Ships and Angels (p.30), but they don't include it in the big British Coin Weights book. These weights can be as much as 100 years later than the original coin, but it is probably 16th century.

A corroded copper-alloy coin weight of probable late medieval to post-medieval date. No exact match could be found for this weight, but similar pieces are illustrated by P. and B. Withers (1995; pp. 32). They are identified as being from Germany or the Low Countries and for the Rijder coin and fractions thereof. The coin weight is square in plan and is uniface, the stamped surface having the image of a horse advancing right, carrying a rider who possibly holds aloft a sword. The image is contained within a beaded circular border. The weight measures 15.9mm high, 15.4mm wide and 2…

1500-1699. Copper alloy, probable brass, cast, 'square shape' probable uniface coin weight. Length 15.0mm, Width 13.6mm, Thickness 2.7mm, Weight 3.6g. Typical Medieval ship with a rose (cinqfoil?) on the front within a beaded circular border. Letters 'R and N' in the field above the ship indicates that the weight is for a rose noble or ryal gold coin, but the actual weight indicates a half ryal coin. A Post-Medieval French copper alloy coin: double tournois of Louis XIII (AD 1610-1643). Barrie Cook, The British Museum, states that it is stylistically a little unusual, however, there were lots of contemporary counterfeits of the French copper coinage at this time, and it can be hard to be sure on worn specimens. The left-facing bust is not usual, but did appear on some issues at the end of the reign, so it could belong to the 1640s.

Medieval coin: an Irish hammered silver penny, cut down so that all of the legend is removed, and only the area inside the inner circle is preserved. The penny is an Irish issue of Edward IV's 'light cross-and-pellets' coinage, minted during his second reign, between 1473 and 1478, at Dublin, Waterford, Drogheda, Trim, or Cork. Such coins are very frequently clipped, and rarely recovered intact. Spink(Scotland and Ireland): 6360-6387A. D: 12.7mm Th:0.62mm Mass 0.3g.
