A silver coin of Medieval date. This is a Continental Sterling imitation, struck at Valenciennes under John II of Avesnes, Count of Hainaut between 1280 and 1304. It is suggested that Valenciennes struck the earliest Hainaut sterlings from c. 1290-1291, was closed during the rebellion of the town against John of Avesnes (1291-1297), and was then reopened in 1297. The coin is worn at the centre and is slightly damaged. It measures 19.1mm in diameter, 0.3mm thick and weighs 1.3g.
