Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded copper-alloy coin weight of probable late medieval to post-medieval date. No exact match could be found for this weight, but similar pieces are illustrated by P. and B. Withers (1995; pp. 32). They are identified as being from Germany or the Low Countries and for the Rijder coin and fractions thereof. The coin weight is square in plan and is uniface, the stamped surface having the image of a horse advancing right, carrying a rider who possibly holds aloft a sword. The image is contained within a beaded circular border. The weight measures 15.9mm high, 15.4mm wide and 2…

A copper-alloy coin weight, probably for a half or quarter noble. This weight is illustrated in 'Lions, ships and angels' (Withers, 1995, p. 20). It was made in Antwerp by an unknown maker (see Withers, p. 60). The weight is rectangular in plan. The obverse bears a circular panel depicting a ship, with a letter 'h' (for 'Henricus') located to the right of the mast. On the reverse is a central hand dividing the letters 'D I'; an inner ring of stars surrounds this central design and, around this, is a second ring, of four large and four small fleurs-de-lys. The object measures 14.…

A copper-alloy coin weight of Medieval date. Withers and Withers (1995: 44) suggest that the image on this coin identifies it as French, and probably relating to the agnel d'or of Philip IV (1268-1314), or the mouton d'or of Jean le Bon (1319-1364) and Charles VI (1368-1422). The weight is rectangular in plan, measuring 10.1mm long by 9.8mm high. The upper surface bears the relief-cast image of a lamb, standing left and holding a banner, its head turned to the right. There does not appear to be any legend. The underside of the weight is plain. It is 4.9mm thick and weighs 3.28g.
