A Medieval silver coin; a continental sterling imitation (a crockard) of John II of Avesnes, count of Hainaut (1280-1304) and count of Holland (1299-1304), dating from AD1290 - 1300. The mint is Mons (now in present-day Belgium). For reference, see Mayhew number 34 (or 159-160) as cited in Withers (forthcoming). The coin has suffered some damage since deposition in the soil and is now bent. It is 19.2mm in diameter and 0.8mm thick. It weighs 1.37gm.

A medieval silver coin: an Irish penny of Edward I, Class 1, Dublin mint. The flan is slightly chipped at 1 o'clock and 6 o'clock on the obverse. It is 17.9mm in diameter and 0.8mm tick. It weighs 1.13gm. It may be Seaby (1984), No. 6246. Compare also BH-DAC1F3 and HESH-D22A17.

A medieval silver coin; a continental coin (stirling imitation?) from Brussels, probably of Jan III the Victorious, Duke of Brabant (1312 – 1355). It has a diameter of 17.48mm, thickness 0.79mm, weight 1.18g. Ref. Vanhoudt G248. De Witte 307 (http://users.telenet.be/medievalcoins/Brabant.htm). Reference: J. Chautard, Imitations des monnaies au type esterlin frapées en Europe pendant le XIIIe et le XIVe siècle (Nancy, 1871), p.62, no.112 and Pl. IX, 9. A silver coin; probably a penny of Edward IV (1461 – 1483) minted at Dublin. The outside of the coin is severely clipped. It has a diameter of 14.77mm, thickness 0.57mm, weight 0.43g. There is an extra pellet in two quarters of the reverse. A reference for this at the Dublin mint has not yet been found. A similar coin except in that respect is number 6323 in Seaby’s Standard Catalogue Volume II.

Part of a clipped medieval silver penny, probably an Irish issue of Richard III or Henry VII (1483 – 1509). Little of the legends survive. The crown is tall with a central fleur and bifoliate side fleurs. There appear to be symbols on the king’s shoulders, though these are not clear.

A medieval silver hammered coin; a Scottish penny of Alexander III, first coinage (1250-80AD). The obverse appears to be a type two. The moneyer is Wilam, and it was probably minted in Roxburgh. A medieval Scottish silver penny of Alexander III (1249 - 1286), possibly a first coinage long cross and stars penny of type VII (1250 - c.1280). The coin is very worn and is not complete, as all the legend has been removed and the edges have been thickened by hammering. It measures 15.8 by 1.6mm and weighs 1.29g. These measurements are unusual and it may be that this is a contemporary forgery. For reference see Seaby 5047. This coin recorded from a photograph.
