A very worn silver Irish shilling of James I (1603-1626). First coinage (1603-4). Martlet mint mark (1604-5). Coin reference: Seaby (Coins and Tokens of Ireland, 1970), number 4513, p59.
In "Coins and Tokens from Ireland", Seaby (1970, p.58-9) states: "In order to replace Elizabeth's war-time base money james issued a new coinage in "fine" silver between 1603 and 1607 which was minted in London; but his objective was a uniform currency throughout his realm of "Great Britain and Ireland" and thenceforward only the standard silver coins of the Tower mint were made for use in Ireland.…
