A uniface medieval, lead alloy token, dating from c. 1100-1500. The upper surface is decorated with a crude sun or star design consisting of eight raised lines radiating from a central point. The reverse is rough but appears not to be decorated. It is 14.4mm in diameter and 3mm thick. It weighs 2.34gm. Reference: Fletcher, Tokens and Tallies Through the Ages, p. 32.

A very worn, clipped and cut silver coin of later Medieval date. The coin has been cut in half and the edges clipped to the extent that the legends are unidentifiable. This is probably a cut French coin, perhaps a double patard, which became legal tender in Britain in 1469 as an equivalent to the English Groat (see for example LEIC-952473).

A corroded copper-alloy medieval Portuguese coin; a ceitil of Duarte I (1433 - 1438) minted in Lisbon. It is 21.3 mm in diameter and 0.7mm thick. It weighs 0.68gm. The coin is very thin and corroded probably because it was found on a beach. See C.M. Almeida do Amaral, Catalogo descritivo das moedas Portuguesas (Lisbon 1977); p.315, nos 958ff. Edward Besly comments that there are few ceitils from English find spots, though the ceitils of Duarte's successor Afonso V (1438-81) are very common finds all across S Wales.

AD1280-1304 Obv: +I COMES hANONIE; bust facing with rose garland Rev: VAL ENC hEN ENS; long cross with pellets in angles. Mayhew No. 24 The mint is Valenciennes in Hainaut. It is suggested that Valenciennes struck the earliest Hainaut sterlings c. AD1290-1, was closed during the rebellion of the town against John of Avesnes, 1291-7, and was then reopened in 1297 as documents show.

A copper alloy Medieval coin weight. It is a uniface round weight, bearing a figure on horseback riding right with a sword in hand. It is 14.5mm x 14.2mm x 2.9mm, and weighs 3.38g. This weight was probably French and made for a cheval of Jean II (1350-1364) or Charles V (1364-1380). The weight is without a legend. This weight is similar to an example in 'Identifying coin weights found in Britain' by P and B R Withers (p.32).

A silver late Medieval coin; a double petard of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy (1467-1477). The coin has a diameter of 26.8mm and is 0.8mm thick. It weighs 2.94g. Similar coins are recorded on the PAS database. In 1469 a monetary convention between Duke Charles and King Edward IV made the former's coinage in the Low Countries legal tender in England. In practice, only the double patard established itself in currency, with a formal valuation equal to the silver groat, i.e. fourpence. Medieval french coin weight; circular copper alloy uniface coin weight with a design of a man on a horse. Per Withers’ book this is a weight for the franc a cheval which was issued in the reigns of Jean II and Charles V (1364-1380). The weight does have an inscription, although this is mostly illegible. Quite worn. Diameter 14.4mm, thickness 2.8mm, weight 3.14g Ref: This weight is described and illustrated in Withers “Lions Ships and Angels” page 32. The franc a cheval is detailed on page 70.
