A copper-alloy 16th century biface coin weight produced in Antwerp by Cornelius Janssen and dated to 1583 AD. It is flat, square in shape measuring 15.33mm in length, 15.21mm in width, and 2.86g in weight. The cross motif of the reverse face of this weight probably indicates its usage for weighing Spanish or Portugese coinage, although it falls a little under the standard weights for both the Spanish escudo (3.38g) and the Portugese cruzado (3.5g). See Withers and Withers, 1995: pp. 44, 60, 71.

A square, double-sided coin weight of Post-medieval date. This Low Countries weight appears to have been issued for a Flanders half lion coin. A copper-alloy coin weight, probably for a half or quarter noble. This weight is illustrated in 'Lions, ships and angels' (Withers, 1995, p. 20). It was made in Antwerp by an unknown maker (see Withers, p. 60). The weight is rectangular in plan. The obverse bears a circular panel depicting a ship, with a letter 'h' (for 'Henricus') located to the right of the mast. On the reverse is a central hand dividing the letters 'D I'; an inner ring of stars surrounds this central design and, around this, is a second ring, of four large and four small fleurs-de-lys. The object measures 14.…

1500-1699. Copper alloy, probable brass, cast, 'square shape' probable uniface coin weight. Length 15.0mm, Width 13.6mm, Thickness 2.7mm, Weight 3.6g. Typical Medieval ship with a rose (cinqfoil?) on the front within a beaded circular border. Letters 'R and N' in the field above the ship indicates that the weight is for a rose noble or ryal gold coin, but the actual weight indicates a half ryal coin. The reverse appears blank which could indicate German manufacture or possibly a very worn illegible design - to indicate from the Low Countries. Little wear and attractive green patina. Re…

Cast copper alloy coin weight. A square double sided weight with a stamped, incuse crowned upper case H on the obverse and stamped incuse letters in three lines:D/V/XV(dot). Paul Withers kindly identified the weight as follows: This is a weight for a double henri d’or of Henri II of France (1547-59). This coin was issued at an official weight of 5 deniers and 17 grains. I suspect that under all the corrosion on the piece you may find that there are two dots after the XV, not just the obvious one. Mr Dieudonné, who wrote the almost impossible-to-follow book on the subject says th…

Copper alloy coin weight. The weight is square, flat and decorated. The weight is for either an excelente (c.3.5g) or double excelente (c.7g) of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, the coin type introduced in 1497 (excelentes were usually known as ducats, since they shared their standards). The weight is probably English, as it resembles a version in the Withers' little pamphlet Lions, Ships and Angels (p.30), but they don't include it in the big British Coin Weights book. These weights can be as much as 100 years later than the original coin, but it is probably 16th century.
