Complete copper alloy Post-Medieval coin weight. The weight is roughly square in shape. The upper face has the raised figures 'X.V.s' below a crown and the reverse face has a circular groove around the outer edge with a raised sun symbol surrounded by lions and fleur de lis in the centre. A shiny green patina remains in some places, but the surface is fairly erroded and pitted. Weights bearing the sun symbol are for the spur ryal (or rose noble) of James I (Withers 1995, p.38). Those bearing the value XVs are for his 2nd coinage; 1604-12 and 3rd coinage; 1619-25 (ibid.). Dimensions:…

A double-sided copper-alloy square coin weight of post-medieval date. The weight is for an angel - an 11 shilling coin of James I during the period of his second coinage (1604-1619 AD; Withers and Withers 1995, 22). The reverse is countermarked with a crowned 'I' in the top righthand corner. At 47.5 grains this weight is rather light even though weights are typically made slightly light and lose more weight through corrosion; angels in this period weighed 71 grains (ibid., p. 68).

A cast copper alloy coin weight. The weight is circular in plan and rectangular in section with rounded corners. The weight has ‘VI’ surmounted by a arched crown on one face. The other face has iron corrosion adhered to it so any decoration is not visible. The weight has an iron stained surface therefore it is brown. It measures 15.6mm diameter, 2.31mm thick and weighs 2.5g. The style of the crown is similar to that seen on coin weights of Charles II and James II so probably dates to the late 17th to early 18th centuries (Biggs, N. 1193 English Weights: An Illustrated Survey Wh…

A worn, square coinweight. The weight is in the manner of late C16th/early C17th Antwerp coin weights but there is feint, worn decoration on one side of what appears to be a female bust, perhaps of Queen Anne, with ANGL[ORUM??].... around. The bust could also be that of Elizabeth I. The mass of the coin weight is 4.5g which equates to just under 69.5 grains.
