A medieval silver penny of Edward II. The coin is a mule of class 11b1/11a2, Durham mint.
Description: The coin is very worn and has some striking weakness in some areas. There are both rounded-backed and pointed-backed C's and E's, a crosier at the end of one arm of the reverse cross (at 12 o'clock) and a CIVI/TAS/DVN/ELM reverse legend.
Measurements: Diameter 18.16mm Weight 1.06g.
Discussion: The different styles of C and E indicate that this is a mule of a class 11b1 obverse with an 11a2 reverse.

A medieval hammered silver penny, mint of Durham and struck during the reign of Edward II. The obverse has a forward facing bust and the legend: EDWAR [---]. On the reverse is a long cross with three pellets in each angle and the legend: CIVITAS DUNELM. The coin is extremely worn, but certain feature such as the open 'E' and wide fleurs of the crown indicate that it belongs to the later classes of Edwardian coins, probably 11-15, and was therefore struck between 1310 and 1333.
