Stone rubber. A water-rolled pebble with abundant black flecks to diameter 3mm, with one flattened sub-triangular surface. The object is of a size to fit snugly in the hand and may have been used for a grinding or polishing task using the flat face. The use of a probable Glacial Erratic for such purposes might be ascribed to Prehistory, or indeed any time up to the Viking Age, when the international supply of stone for specialist purposes was revived. Suggested date: Unknown, Neolithic to Early Medieval, 4000BC-AD850 Height: 42.5mm, Width: 49.2mm, Weight: 136.26gms

A perforated stone which is probably a geological phenomenon rather than an archaeological one. It is a fine grained grey stone with sparse mica inclusions and occasional pockets of a dark grey soft and powdery material. The stone is oval in plan, with smooth and fairly flat faces and slightly rounded sides. It is water worn. In the centre is a sub-circular irregular hole right through the cobble. The hole has not been drilled - it is not circular, and the inside wall has vertical striations and ridges. These do not give a magnetic response despite some orange staining. The uneven insi…

An incomplete stone object, a probable whetstone or hone stone of unknown date. The object is formed from a finely grained light brown stone with a few micaceous inclusions. It is rectangular, smooth, with rounded edges, as if manufactured, but has breaks at both ends, one at an angle to the whole block, the other a more or less straight break. It has clearly been used to sharpen different blades or other sharp objects. A fragment of stone, possibly a fragment of a quern, of Roman to medieval date, (c.43 AD - 1500 AD). Description: The fragment is broadly triangular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. The longer, curved edge of the triangle shape suggests the outer edge of a quern stone, though this edge is very rough. The other edges are broken. One face is worked. On the worked face, there is a dished indentation whose curved edge is parallel to the line of the curved outer edge. This indentation is probably part of the central hollow of the lower stone of a quern. There is no …

A waterworn and polished stone that may have been used as whetstone or hone stone, at an unknown date. The stone is broadly rectangular in pln and cross-section, though it is taller at one end, and that thcker end then tapers to a rounded point. The top and one side are flattened and there are faint striations, suggesting the stone may have been used. The other side is rougher and is probably natural. The base is smooth but undulating with some visible striations. The stone is fine textured and homogenous apart from the rougher face which has apparent inclusions of harder material that…

A stone tool, possibly used as a scraper or whetstone. It is sub rectangular in shape but one of the long sides extends to form a point with the short side, the other short end is rounded. All four sides narrow to a point, which thus runs around the circumference of the object. It is not knapped but ground, the stone is possibly granite. It has an even brown patina with a granular appearance all over the surface. Dating this type of implement is difficult as whetstones were in use over a long period. Reddish-buff fine grained micaceous or glittering Sandstone fragment, possibly broken from a stone roof tile; all edges broken. The finder kindly notes marks on both flat sides: on the greyer side these comprise a long cross with rays projecting from its angles beside its longer bar; a similar cross with a single supplementary stroke appears on the redder side as well. The dating and significance of the markings is very uncertain, though the use of stone roof tiles might be expected from the Roman period onwards, their supply presumably depending on transport along the River Trent.
