Object type: SADDLE QUERN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An apparently complete Neolithic to Iron Age stone saddle quern (4000 BC-AD 42) This quern is made of limestone and is probably local Bembridge Limestone or Quarr Stone. It is sub-square in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. The underside is uneven and worn in places and the centre of the upper face is dished forming a grinding surface. The edges of the upper face have been deliberately smoothed or worn. One end is partially flat and smooth and may have been deliberately formed as such. A muller (rubber) would have been used on the working surface to grind grain. A su…

Object type: MORTAR (VESSEL)
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete stone mortar or type of saddle quern of Unknown date. The object is sub-triangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. It is composed of fossiliferous Bembridge Limestone (not Quarr Stone) and the steeply carved oval recess is smooth through use. The sides are generally irregular. One side is partially flat and has been carved as such. The bottom is slightly convex and has a number of scuff marks, probably related to modern agricultural activity. A reddened area on the side may indicate burning or heating. The stone is generally a buff colour and the b…

An incomplete and damaged Neolithic to Iron Age saddle quern (4500 BC-AD 43) This quern is made from close grained ?limestone. It is sub-oval in plan and a narrow 'D'- shape in cross-section. The underside is evenly curved and the upper surface is dished, less curved, and has been 'pecked' to form a working surface. A muller (rubber) would have been used on the working surface to grind grain. The surface of the quern is coarse and buff and has a recent transverse break. It has numerous striations, possibly caused by ploughing and has been chipped in three places recently. Length:…

Object type: GRAIN RUBBER

Complete sandstone grain rubber of unknown date. Length 77mm, diameter 93mm. Weight 966g. The rubber is sub-spheroidal in form and sub-circular in plan and the underside is slightly convex. Consequently, it could be described as being dome-shaped. The shape has probably been achieved by pecking and then finished by grinding. A large indentation on the curved side has peck marks on its surfaces. Therefore, this indented feature appears to have been deliberately created and is not an accidental break. The purpose of the indentation was probably to enable the rubber to be held comfortably…

Unidentified stone object of unknown date. Length 175mm, width 120mm and 92mm thick. Weight 2,990g. The stone is a beach cobble of sedimentary orthoquartzite, the matrix of which is closely bonded grains of sandstone. It is sub-ovoid in form and sub-oval in cross-section. At one end two sections have been removed, probably by the action of rubbing or grinding, to create faces which are convex in profile. The faces of the sections converge to form a carinated edge. The other end is rounded and has a slightly flattened area which may also have been created by rubbing or grinding. There …
