Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Probable casting waste of an unknown period with a noticeable copper content. The discovery of the four pieces of material in close proximity suggests they probably were associated with working something copper alloy with heat. Their distribution would suggest a date of deposition later in the suggested date range which is c1600 BC to c1970 AD (mid Bronze Age to Modern).

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Unidentified copper alloy object, possibly a Romano British brooch fragment or a Post Medieval firearm trigger element. The object is mis-shapen due to being heat effected or concreted or miscast. Overall form and dimensions are suggestive of a Romano British brooch though the lower projection is possibly a little thick for a brooch bow or catchplate. There is also a resemblance to basic firearm triggers and the orientation is correct though the section above could be seen to be too 'chunky'. If it is a firearm trigger it is likely to predate the common usage of percussion ammunition.…

Object type: BEAD
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Bronze Age to Early Medieval copper alloy bead or mount. It is undecorated, circular in plan with a central perforation, and oval in section. The diameter of the perforation is 9mm. Without doing a comparative analysis of the alloy used in their manufacture, dating of this sort of bead is problematic as they crop in the archaelogical record associated with sites dating from the Bronze Age to the Early Medieval. Other objects of all these periods have been found within the local area so the dating can't be tightened by association. Similar objects from the archaeological record are bot…

Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Undateable gold or yellow metal object, probably metal working waste, possibly Early Medieval bullion. It is sub-circular in plan and oval in cross-section. The globular form is undiagnostic, and it is therefore not possible to date with any degree of certainty. The weight is quite close to that of a half-ertog or eyrir (4 or 4.26g), but not sufficiently close to justify a firm date, especially since the object does not appear to be a finished item, which means the weight may not be significant on any weight standard. Metal working melts are known from the Viking Age, but the artefact…

Object type: BUCKET
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An assemblage of eleven copper alloy band or strap fragments, possibly from a stave built bucket. From the fragments it has been possible to adduce that at least some of the straps were originally 66mm wide, attached by rivets of pegs through perforations approximately 3mm in diameter, and probably originally reactangular in plan. There are no diagnostic features that can allow a reliable dating. The fragments could date to anytime from the Bronze Age to the Post Medieval. Suggested date range c2350 BC to c1850 AD
Total weight of fragments is 68.23g.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Roman to Post Medieval lead or lead alloy weight studded with iron nails. The weight is circular in plan and a slightly curved rounded rectangle in section. There is a raised circumferal ridge on one face. At least twelve rectangular section nails have been driven into and through the weight from this face. The finder says that when first found, the heads of these nails were more complete. The other face is plain and the ends of many of the nails are visible. There also appears to be two nails driven in from this side. Unlike the other face, all the iron is flush with the surface. Thi…

Object type: CHAIN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Early Roman to Late Post Medieval copper alloy chain links. The links are hand made and sub oval in plan and curved in profile. They are undiagnostic and could date to anytime between c43 and c1800 AD.
The length is 20mm, width 14mm, thickness 12mm, and the weight is 9.22g.

A small piece of silver waste. The date it was created and its original purpose are no longer discernable. One side is flat and the other has a series of raised ridges. Could date from anytime between the Bronze Age and the Modern period.

Object type: TOGGLE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Bronze Age to Post Medieval copper alloy object, possibly reused as a toggle. It is roughly 'T' shape in plan, a shallow curve in profile and sub rectangular in section. It is undecorated and has a central perforation. The perforation's diameter is 4mm. The ends of the T have break scars, implying it was once part of a larger object. The perforation has not been subjected to the same wear as the rest of the object suggesting it was made in order to give the fragment a new purpose, possibly as a toggle. Impossible to ascribe a close dating. Dates to anytime from c1000 BC to c1660 AD.

Roman to Post Medieval bell shaped lead-alloy or lead suspended weight. At the apex of the 'bell' are the remnants of the trapped iron suspension loop. Hard to date with any precision but it probably dates to between c43 and c1750 AD. The height is 39mm, diameter is 26mm and the weight is 104.52g.
