Two amorphic piece of copper alloy slag. Found in an area with Bronze Age and Roman artefacts. The surface is characterised by lumps and hollows and has a tin element is indicated relating to bronze working. The slag has a good deep green patina, similar to that seen on some local Bronze Age metalwork, so it may date from this period. If this lump of slag is indeed Bronze Age, it is interesting that it has survived and was not re-melted. Fragments of casting waste like this one are hard to date. Scientific analysis of the elemental composition of the copper alloy would allow a more acc…

There is also a possibility that it is related to brooch making. Combined measurements are length 37mm, width 42mm and weight 20.09g. First, this may be a trial piece or model of Roman date, or possibly a symbolic replacement for a brooch. The latter is occasionally encountered, though mainly in post-Roman (Anglo-Saxon) burial contexts. This may be a 19th century imitation of a Romano-British brooch form in an easily cast material, om…

It is possibly Roman as it was found adjacent to an amount of silver denarii and Roman pottery. A copper alloy mount in the form of a folded bird wing (or possibly an angels wing). It is difficult to determine whether this was part of a composite piece such as a statue or mounted flat onto something else which the presence of studs on the reverse suggest. No parallels can be found, but given the high level of detail present in the casting of the feathers, suggests a later date. Likely to be late Post Medieval to Early Modern. It has a patina varying between green and brown, with some copper corrosion showing. The length is 45mm, the width is 26mm and the weight 9.95g.
