Object type: BEAD
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A glass bead possibly of unknown period possibly Early Medieval but more likely modern, cylindrical or drum-shaped formed from transparent yellow glass with a dull yellow collar around either end. It may well be a reticella bead made up of panels of twisted cable laid onto the surface of the bead as there are blue and red rods around the edge around the centre. Beads are very difficult to date as they do not change a great deal upto the modern day hence the attribution. The diameter is 7mm, the length is 8mm, the width is 7mm and the weight 0.57g.

Unusual lead alloy mount of unknown date and period it appears to be in the form a medal decorated with a swastika. The stamped cross is more consistent with a later Medieval style, suggesting it dates to the 12th to 16th Centuries AD. The pendant is a mid grey in colour, with an even surface patina. A direct parallel for this find has not been located at the time of recording. The swastika, the 'crux gammatica' (a cross formed from 4 Greek capital gamma characters) was widely used long before the Christian period, possibly in pagan religious contexts. It did however continue in use…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Unknown object of unknown age. Possibly a lead alloy buckle fragment. It consists of two coterminous fragments decorated with moulded tranverse ridges. There is also a possibility that it is related to brooch making. Combined measurements are length 37mm, width 42mm and weight 20.09g. First, this may be a trial piece or model of Roman date, or possibly a symbolic replacement for a brooch. The latter is occasionally encountered, though mainly in post-Roman (Anglo-Saxon) burial contexts. This may be a 19th century imitation of a Romano-British brooch form in an easily cast material, omit…

A penannular ring of cast copper alloy, possibly an ear ring of unknown date. The ring is decorated with opposing incised lines. Objects of similar shape are quite common finds from Roman contexts and are usually interpreted as earrings (Allason-Jones "Ear-Rings in Roman Britain"; this is interpreted as Type 1 common from 1st to the 4th century). Similar objects have, however, also been found from later, Early Medieval contexts, where they are interpreted as finger rings or earrings (Rogers "Anglian and other finds from Fishergate" pages 1370-1371, inc fig 668, artefacts 5411-5413). A gold fragment of an artefact of an undiagnostic date. It is in the form of a penannular wire loop which appears to have been hammered to shape and may have originally been circular but has been crushed and appears to have been deliberately cut at both ends. It seems likely that it is a jewellery fragment and could be a crushed ring fragment or off an ear ring. It is possibly Roman as it was found adjacent to an amount of silver denarii and Roman pottery. However it is undiagnostic and cannot be securely dated to any period therefore it does not classify as treasure. The length is 20…
