Two lead truncated conical weights or spindle whorls of uncertain Roman to post-medieval date.  Objects such as these were used for a long period of time for a variety of functions with little change in form. They may be crude spindle whorls, but seem more likely to be weights are are too irregular in shape. 1. Diameter: 19.77mm, thickness: 11.53mm, weight: 16.07g (diameter of central hole: c.7.35mm) 2. Diameter: 16.38mm, thickness: 10.22mm, weight: 11.37g  (diameter of central hole: c.7.2mm)

A complete lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is plano-convex in shape with a convex upper surface and a flat base. It is sub circular in shape with an off-centre circular hole. It has an internal diameter of 8.62mm. The whorl measures 30.46 mm in diameter and is 8.69 mm thick. It weighs 41.49g. It has a light gray/white patina.  Objects such as these were used for a long period of time for a variety of functions with little change in form. A complete Roman to post-medieval lead spindle whorl. It has a flat base and convex upper surface. There is a central circular hole, 8.89mm in diameter. There scratches, marks and a raised pellet on the curved upper surface, although these do not appear to form a distinct pattern. The metal survives in good condition. Undecorated spindle whorls were in use from the Roman to post-medieval period. The small diameter of the hole may indicate a date towards the earlier of this chronology. A complete lead weight of uncertain date. The object is disc-shaped and perforated with a small off-centre hole. It could possibly have been used as a spindle whorl, but seems too irregularly shaped to have functioned correctly. Because the object lacks diagnostic features it could easily date from the Roman to post-medieval period. Diameter: 33.36mm, diameter of central hole: 11.17mm, thickness: 7.21mm, weight: 51.60g

An complete lead Iron Age to Post-Medieval biconical spindle whorl. It is formed from two flattened, truncated cones, joined at the base with a narrow circular hole (c.6mm) through the centre (Walton-Rogers Type B3). The surface is worn, whitish grey in colour and pitted in places. Undecorated spindle whorls of this form were in use from the Iron Age well into the post-medieval period with little change in form and are therefore difficult to date precisely. Walton-Rogers (2007, 24-5) suggests that bi-conical whorls with narrow central holes (

A narrow circular hole runs longitudinally through the centre where a lost suspension rod and loop may once of passed. It weights 139.5g or just under 5oz. A complete lead hanging weight of probable medieval to post-medieval date. The object is rectangular both in shape and cross-section. There is a small square hole through one end and a wheel-like design has been incised on one face. The surface of the metal is corroded and there is damage in places around the sides. A complete lead bell-shaped object, possibly a weight of uncertain Roman to post-medieval date range. The object is of simple straight-sided shape with a small circular suspension loop extending from the upper end. Both sides have been crushed together. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded. Because the object is made from lead it is unlikely to have actually functioned as a bell. Although lead bells were produced in the medieval period at Canterbury as pilgrim souvenirs (e.g. LON-806D1C, KENT-EC8680, LON-C82858 and LEIC-6F1903) the patina and crude form of this example may …
