Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A rectangular, or bar-shaped piece of silver casting waste. One end of the bar has been flattened although the purpose for this is unclear. There are markings on one side of the bar that look like a row of zig-zags, but this may just be a result of the casting process. Although made of silver, the artefact is undiagnostic and cannot be securely dated to pre-1712 AD. Therefore it does not fulfill the criteria of the Treasure Act 1996.

Two copper alloy annular beads of unknown date. The beads both have a D-shaped cross section and have a large roughly central perforation. Unfortunately this style of bead was current over many centuries, however given the style of the beads and their findspot a date range of the later Iron Age to Early-medieval period would seem most likely. Several similar beads have been recorded on this database, including SF-B53242 and LIN-E32586. The larger bead measures 14.39mm in diameter and the smaller measures 12.80mm diameter.

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy disc-shaped object, possibly a spindle whorl. The object has a roughly circular hole in its centre while being roughly D-shaped in section. The object's surface is damaged being pitted on both surfaces, which would otherwise have been smooth. Hard to date out of context, the possible spindle whorl may date anywhere from the Iron Age through to the Medieval period; it is suggested that it is Roman or Early-medieval in date.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy 3-dimensional bird mount, possibly for furniture or a vessel. The mount is in the form of a stylised bird with a long beak (now bent) and a long tail that widens at the tip into a rounded terminal. The bird's back and tail is decorated with deep hatching probably intended to represent feathers; the decoration on the tail spreads out from the back in cross hatching. There are two short (broken) stubs protruding outwards from the body beneath the bird's neck and these may be the remains of wings; underneath the bird are two legs, again broken. Behind the legs and dir…

Two fired clay spherical balls, possibly gaming pieces, counters or shots. The fabric is an off-white and has pink to dark red swirls within and few fine iron inclusions. The fabric is reminiscent of some Roman Oxfordshire ceramics, such as Parchment Ware, but there is no evidence to suggest that these objects date to the Roman period and in reality they could date up to the Post-medieval period. One of the objects is complete while about a third of the other survives.

A complete cast copper alloy double horse-head plate brooch, possibly Roman in date but potentially a modern creation. The brooch has a curved rectangular panel bar that curves downwards and is filled with yellow enamel. The terminals of the bar has three incised grooves within the copper that are reminiscent of an animal's paws. Projecting from the centre of the lower side of the curved bar is a short neck that leads into two opposing horse heads. The horse heads are depicted in profile and face outwards from the centre of the brooch. They are equidistant either side of the neck. The …

County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy conical staff base fitting (possibly), of uncertain date. The object has two opposing rivet holes on the open end that may have been used to secure to fitting to the staff. Internally, the fitting has iron corrosion on one side, suggesting either the rivets were iron or that whatever was inserted into the fitting had an iron element. There are numerous scored vertical lines all over the outer body of the object although these are rough and uneven and may not be intentional design elements. One side of the fitting has suffered damage and an area is broken and …

A cast copper alloy mount of unknown date. The mount is sub-triangular in plan and appears to be made from two sheets of copper alloy. The front of the mount has a raised sexfoil flower design in the centre but is otherwise plain. The reverse of the mount has a raised but hollow central boss, filled with a glassy substance, possibly a type of putty? This reverse projection appears to have snapped onto something, and may have been the primary attachment. There is one rivet or suspension hole drilled through the top point of the triangle, while what appear to be slight indentations (un-…

A large, roughly rectangular lump of bronze slag, airholes throughout and some elements of the raw copper sulphide are visible (a green-blue colour). The slag has a good deep green patina, similar to that seen on some local Bronze Age metalwork, so it may date from this period. If this lump of slag is indeed Bronze Age, it is interesting that it has survived and was not re-melted, as it is quite an amount of bronze.

A cast copper alloy mount of unknown age but dating from the late Iron Age to Roman period. One end of the mount is missing but it appears that it would have mirrored the two openwork circles that are extant; it was initially thought that this was a phallus mount but it does not appear so - it bears some similarities to middle and later Iron Age brooches but otherwise no comparison had been found in the available literature. There are no obvious mounting or attachment points on the reverse.

A silver circular disc, possibly a reused token, pierced to be hung as a pendant. Obverse decoration: five-pointed star (pentagram) consisting of double lines with each point extending beyond the outer edge of the pendant. The pentagram lines are decorated with short straight lines protruding at right angles, giving a textured or feathered appearance. In the centre of the pentagram is a sub-circular, roughly spiral design, again double lined, with punched-dot decoration within, possibly representing a skull. The reverse of the pendant shows faint circular design - this maybe from an e…
