A complete cast lead alloy spindle whorl of uncertain date (Roman to medieval, c. AD 43-1500). The spindle whorl is sub-conical with eleven moulded ribs down its sides with a central circular aperture with a diameter of 9.8mm. The height of the whorl is uneven which may suggest an earlier date as medieval whorls are frequently biconvex. There is cracking to all surfaces of the whorl. Similar whorls have been recorded on this database: see HESH-4CF861, and HESH-98F1C0.

A lead alloy biconical spindle whorl of probable medieval date. There is traces of faint moulded decoration in the form of vertical ribs around both upper and lower hemispheres. The central hole is slightly sub-circular. Although spindle whorls are very hard to date withour contectual informaiton or more distinction decoration, it is likely that thsi example dates from the medieval period. However comparing this to other examples, it is taller, more narrow and more compact than the usual medieval-attributed examples recorded on this database.

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl or lead weight. The whorl is plano-convex in cross section with a central sub-circular perforation from the top through to the base. Simple items like this have been used throughout the ages for a variety of tasks such as spindle whorls or fishing or goods weights. They have been used since the Roman period through to the modern periods. As this item is not from an archaeological context and is not decorated unfortunately it cannot be accurately dated but finds from the area suggest a Roman to medieval date.

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl or lead weight, possibly with a high tin content as the object has a silvery appearance. The whorl or weight is plano-convex in cross section with an off-centre sub-circular perforation from the top through to the base. The base has several small indentations around it but these do not appear to be decorative and are more likely the result of the manufacturing process. Simple items like this have been used throughout the ages for a variety of tasks such as spindle whorls or fishing or goods weights. They have been used since the Roman period through to…

Three crudley cast lead alloy spindle whorls or lead weights of varying size. All three are plano-convex in cross section with an off-centre perforation from the top through to the base. Simple items like this have been used throughout the ages for a variety of tasks such as spindle whorls or fishing or goods weights. They have been used since the Roman period through to the modern periods. As these items are not from an archaeological context and are not decorated unfortunately they cannot be accurately dated and are given a broad AD 43-1500 date range.

A chalk spindle whorl of unknown date. The spindle is approximately half complete. It would have been roughly circular in plan and is plano-convex in section. It has a roughly circular hole drilled through the centre. Spindle whorls are very hard to date without any context, with examples known from prehistory through to the medieval and later periods. However it is more likely that this example is post-Roman in date, possibly dating from the early-medieval to medieval period, c. AD 410-1500.

A cast copper alloy disc-shaped object, possibly a spindle whorl. The object has a roughly circular hole in its centre while being roughly D-shaped in section. The object's surface is damaged being pitted on both surfaces, which would otherwise have been smooth. Hard to date out of context, the possible spindle whorl may date anywhere from the Iron Age through to the Medieval period; it is suggested that it is Roman or Early-medieval in date.
