Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Darlington
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead object, possibly a spindle whorl of uncertain date. The object is circular in plan and domed in section, with a central circular perforation. The base is flat. It has a diameter of 26mm, a thickness of 12mm and the perforation has a diameter of 10mm. It weighs 57.25g. As the diameter of the perforation is greater than 5mm, it has been classified as a spindle whorl rather than a weight following Tyrell (2015).

Ceramic, conical object. It possesses a central perforation measuring 10mm in diameter and a flat bottom.
Dr Kevin Leahy writes: it is most unlikely that this object was, as described, a 'Loom weight' and it was probably a spindle whorl. Dating is impossible on the surviving evidence.

A uneven 'dribble' of lead with a flat underside. The upper surface has a moulded simplistic human figurine. In the area where the genitalia should be, there is a circular perforation. Some sort of attachment or handle may have been threaded through this perforation. It is possible that it may have been used as a stamp to create an impression in clay etc.
It is very difficult to date such an object.

A copper-alloy mount or applique probably post-Roman in date. The mount comprises a hemispherical-section plate in the shape of a flower head with a central piercing measuring 6mm in diameter. The flower possesses six petals. Each petal is moulded and possesses a median groove. The underside of the mount is flat and plain. The mount has a diameter of 19mm, a maximum thickness of 2mm and a weight of 3g.
It is possible that this mount represents a decorative rosette from a Roman baldric or military belt, similar to that found in the Lyon burial (Bishop and Coulston 2009, 160, Fig. 10…

A lead object, possibly a weight of uncertain date. The object is sub-circular and hemispherical in section with a central circular perforation. The base of the object is flat and is decorated with a triangular groove. This surrounds the central perforation which measures 6mm in diameter. The object itself has a diameter of 29mm and weighs 62.17g.
If this object is a weight, it can be classified as a Tyrell (2015) Type A2: a domed weight with a central, circular perforation. Although the diameter of the perforation is 6mm, which would put it in the range of spindle whorls, its weig…

A copper alloy object for which neither a function nor a date can be ascertained. The object looks superficially like a fragment of the bow of a Roman brooch. However, the fragment is asymmetrical unlike any Roman brooches. The object consists of a arched triangular section 'bow' which expands and becomes trapezoidal in section. At one end of the 'bow' there is a horizontal notch. This separates the 'bow' in two. One section is rounded off and appears deliberately finished. The other section appears to be broken. At the other end of the 'bow', there are two extension protruding at righ…
