A lead possible weight of unknown date, Roman to Post medieval, AD 43 - 1800. It is a neatly cast square plaque of lead, with one face concave, and also have a roughly triangular concavity in one corner, probably a casting flaw. The corner sare rounded and the other faces are plain. It has a cream coloured patina. It is 16.6mm long, 15.1mm wide and 10.1mm thick. 36.2g.
The mass does not correspond obviously to the normal standard systems of weighing, so it is possibly this is a weight to add mass, like a paperweight, or it could be a form of ingot - a convenient way to store some spare lead.

A complete lead weight of probable Medieval to Post medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1800. The object is broadly cylindrical with rough edges and surfaces. One end is slightly domed. Off-centre is a sub-circular perforation that cuts through the length of the object. It has a cream patina. Measurements; length 18.1mm, diameter 25.4mm, diameter of perforation 13.6mm, weight 52.84g. This object could possibly have been used as a net weight or it could have been intended to be a 1/8th of a pound, or two ounce (2oz) weight.

A complete lead weight of the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, about AD 1100-1800. The object is broadly conical though oval, with rough edges and surfaces. Off-centre is a sub-circular perforation that cuts through the length of the object. a hollow ring in the base suggests it was cast. It has a mottled grey and cream patina. Measurements; length 21.7mm, diameter 30.3mm, the diameter of perforation12.1mm, weight 61.01g. This mass corresponds to three ounces (3 oz or 1/4 mark) under the Troy system, but it is perhaps more likely that this object was used as a line weight or net sinker.

A cast lead weight, probably a net sinker or fishing line weight of unknown date, 400 BC-AD 1800. In shape, it resembles a small tube with a hole passing through the middle. Each end is narrower than the middle. The weight is unmarked but there are two scratches or small dents, and an irregular seam wherethe lead was rolled around a string or former is visible. It has a creamy white patina. The weight is 26.8mm long; 9.2mm in diameter at the centre and 6.5mm in diameter at each end. It weighs 11.48g. The weight has a dark brown material at each end, perhaps filling a central hole, bu…

A solid lead hemisphere, perhaps a weight, of uncertain date, probably Medieval to post medieval, AD 1200 - 1900. There is a slight depression in the flat face where the lead has cooled after casting. It is 25.9mm diameter, 10.8mm thick and 40g. This mass does not fit obviously into any standardised weight system, so it is possible that the object is a custom made weight, a weight for adding mass instead of measuring, or an ingot for convenient transport or storage of the lead.

A lead weight of uncertain date, probably Medieval to Post Medieval, AD 1200 - 1900. It is a circular disc, slightly recessed on one face. It has a blocked central hole of 5.3mm diameter. There are four pieces of iron embedded in the weight, at the four cardinal points. Only one is clearly visible, the others being below the surface. The weight has a well developed cream patina. It is 48.7mm diameter, 17.4mm thick and at 259g, it does not fit easily into any standard system of weighing. It may instead be designed to add mass to a rope or net, or act as a counterweight.

A probable lead weight of unknown date, Early Medieval to Post Medieval date, AD 700 - 1900. It is a sub-circular disc of lead, trapezoid in cross section. There are no visible markings on either face. It is 27.5mm in diameter, 4.4mm thick and weighs 22.18g. This is not consistent with any common systems of measurement, except perhaps an Irish Viking ounce of 22-23g, but it could also be a lightweight 1 ounce weight. It has a pale grey patina.

A crudely cast lead artefact, probably a weight or steelyard weight of unknown date, AD 43 - 1900. It is roughly barrel shaped - circular in cross-section with a flat base and rounded sides. The top is recessed and angled. Projecting from it is one arm of an iron suspension loop, now corroded away, with a void where the other side of the loop would have been. There are some random striations on the body of the weight but no other markings or decoration. It has a near white patina. The weight is 35.6mm long and 31.9mm diameter. It weighs 231g. This is about 8oz of 1/2lb in the mercanti…

A cast lead alloy artefact, probably a weight of some type, either for adding mass or measuring. The date is unknown, Roman to Modern, about AD 43 - 1950. It has a central, sub-spherical body with a flat, sub-rectangular (trapezoid) extension at each end of the ellipsoid. Each of the extensions has a circular perforation, one of which is larger than the other and shows evidence of wear. The wear suggests a cord or shaft ran through the hole on an angle, closer to the spherical part on one face and towards the ends on the other face. The weight is 98.3mm long, 52.2mm wide and 49.4mm th…

A cast lead weight of uncertain date, possibly a net or line weight. It is in the form of a truncated cone with a flat base and a flat top which has been pierced with a central, circular perforation of internal diameter 6.6mm at the base and 4.2mm at the apex. Some shallow grooves are visible on the surface, two of which form a cross with unequal arms, but it is likely that these markings are later damage. The weight is 19mm high, 19.8mm in diameter, tapering to 13.3mm at the apex. It weighs 39.4g. It does not appear to correspond closely to any standardised weighing system, though it…

Three cast conical lead artefacts of uncertain date, probably Roman to Post Medieval, AD 43 - 1800. All have flat bases, sides tapering to a rounded apex and central, vertical perforations. Two of the perforations are circular but that in the smallest weight is square. These perforations are too small to allow for the passage of anything of greater diameter than thread or line, so are probably net or line weights of some type. None of the weights has any decoration, though all have deep cuts, probably inflicted post-production.
The details of the individual weights are as follows…

Two matching lead probable weights of uncertain date, Roman to Post Medieval, about AD 43 - 1800. Each one is a solid cylinder. They have a depression on the underside from the lead contracting as it cooled, and each is decorated with a raing in relief on the top. They have a well developed white patina.
1. 11.86mm high, 16.52mm diameter, 21g.
2. 11.72mm high, 15.4mm diameter, 19.8g. This one is more worn on the top.
The mass of these weights does not correspond with any standard weighing systems, so it is likely that they are weights for tensioning, weighing down or ad…

A cast lead weight of uncertain date, probably Roman to Post Medieval (AD 43 - 1800). The weight is a short cylinder with a flat base and an angled top, but straight sides. There is a stub of an iron loop or rivet projecting from the centre of the sloping face. The weight has a smooth white patina. It is 25.5mm diameter, 15.9mm thick and 68.5g. This mass does not obviously match any of the main systems of measurement known. It could be a non-standard weight for a specific purpose, or it could be a weight that was used to add mass to another object rather than for weighing.

A lead alloy pyramidal standing weight of Early Medieval, Medieval or Post Medieval date, about AD 850 - 1800. The weight has a rounded square base, and flat triangular sides, tapering to a blunt point at the apex. It has a slight tilt. There is a circular hole through the top of the weight. The weight has a smooth grey patina. It is 35.2mm tall, and is 19.1mm wide and 18.9m thick. It has a mass of 62.2g. This is a little too heavy for a standard two ounce weight, and would have been even more with a missing suspension loop through the hole. Without any loop, it is exactly 1/6 of a tr…

A lead weight of uncertain date, Roman to Post Medieval, AD 43 - 1800. The weight is ovoid and has a depression at each end. These were originally assumed to be perforations for attachment loops, but the hollows are only 1mm deep and there are no traces of iron corrosion. This weight is therefore unlikey to be a Roman steelyard weight. It does, however, work as a standing weight. It is 26.2mm long, 20.9mm wide and 18.1mm thick, with a mass of 53.1g. This mass is equal to two Roman ounces (1 uncia is 27.3g) or 1/6 of a Roman libra. However, it is also very close to 1/8 of a pound in th…
