A copper alloy unidentified object of uncertain date, Roman to Modern, AD 43 - 1900. It is a disc which is flat on one face. It has rounded edges and the other face is shallowly conical. A slight scar at the apex could suggest that a shaft or attachment loop once extended here. There is no decoration. The patina is dark grey, chipped in places revealing a green core. It is 16.1mm diameter, 7.9mm thick and 7.5g. It has been suggested that this object is a Roman gaming piece, but it would not be an easy shape to pick up to move. It could also be a pin head, a button, a stud or the …

A copper alloy solid domed boss, perhaps part of a larger object, of unknown date, AD 43 - 1800. The wear to the broken edges and the patina suggest a date in the earlier end of this range, perhaps Roman. The object is a hemispherical dome which is solid. At the apex is a projecting bump of a different coloured and different alloy of copper alloy. It is dark red, rather than patinated to green. It may be an insert into the dome. On one edge, where more of the area surrounding the dome survives, there is a deep groove before a raised rim. the other edges are all broken nearer to th…

A copper alloy unidentified object of uncertain date, the condition of the metal making a Medieval to post medieval date most likely. It is a rod of copper alloy, circular in cross-section at one end, and lozenge shaped for two thirds of the length from the other end, which also tapers to a point. There is a wide notch across one corner of the lozenge near the tip. A short groove spiralling round the side of the object at the circular end may be damage. The circular end is flat, possibly with the traces of a recessed cross on the end face. The metal has a dark green patina wi…

An unidentified lead object of uncertain date, Roman to Post Medieval, about AD 43 - 1900, but perhaps more likely to be Post Medieval. The incomplete object is a pointed oval in plan. The front is convex and is moulded with a V shaped groove defining a triangular area at one end with concave sides creating a visual effect similar to a beetle opening its wings, like a depiction of a fly or like the bud of a flower. The "wings" of the fly are slightly proud. At what would be the stem end of a flower bud is a short, wide projection, moulded with two small domes next to each other. The o…

A lead alloy object, a possible lead weight or spindle whorl of unknown date. Its size, the shape and size of the central perforation suggests a heavy spindle whorl rather than a weight. The artefact is discoid in plan and rectangular in cross section but with slightly curved sides. It is decorated with incised radiating lines and has an overall smooth pale yellow grey patina. There is a central hole, conical on one face, of 4.8mm diameter. It is is a spindle whorl, the small spindle hole tends to suggest an early date, in the late Iron Age or Roman period. However, the central hole …

A copper alloy unidentified object of uncertain date and function, probably AD 43 - 1800. In plan, it consists of a semicircular solid plate with the straight edge being wavy, with two concave area and rounded lobes between. In cross section the artefact is thicker at wavy side and then steps thinner in the centre, so the rounded side is thin. The edges are abrdaed, but there are no obvious breaks, and it has an overall brown and green patina. Dimensions: 20.6mm long, 15.1mm wide and 2.8mm thick. 2.6g.

A cast lead unidentified object of uncertain date, probably Post Medieval to Modern, AD 1600 - 1900. It may be a dress fitting. The main plate is broadly triangular in plan, with a rounded point at one end, which we could call the base. This area is bent slightly forward, but appears complete. Above this the sides flare out, giving the object a face-like appearance. Reinforcing this impression are several features; in the lower part of the triangle is a small circular domed protrusion and immediately above it is a larger circular protrusion inside a teardrop shaped line. These resemb…

A lead perforated disc of probable unknown date perhaps used as a fishing line weight or washer. It is circular with a central circular hole of 3.5mm diameter. It differs from spindle whorls because the central hole is smaller, and because the disc is thinner and bent. There is also some damage around the central hole, perhaps from another element. The disc has a smooth white patina. It is 22.9mm diameter, 4.1mm thick and 11.2g.

An iron unidentified object of unknown date, AD 43 - 1950. In form, it is a long, narrow scoop, concave on one face and convex on the other. At one end the tops of the walls extend into a flat plate with broken edges. The other end also has broken edges but appears to have been rounded. It could be a specialised spoon or seed drill scoop, or perhaps a handle or leaver. It is 87.1mm long, 25.1mm wide and 11.9mm thick. 35.2g. It is similar in form to Roman cosmetic mortars, but is larger. It is recorded because it was found about 20m from the coin hoard SWYOR-A99131, and in the same v…

A fragment of an unidentified copper alloy artefact, possibly of Medieval or post-Medieval date. It is broadly D shaped in pan, with a short flange projecting along the straight edge, and curved in profile, making it C shaped in cross-section. The flange appears complete, but the other face is broken on all sides. It could have been tubular, hooked or U shaped when complete. The inner face of the curved part carries a layer of lead or a lead alloy compound. There is no decoration and the outer surface displays a very rough, patchy, light green patina. The object is 27.3mm long, 16.…

A sheet silver unidentified object of unknown date probably Medieval to Modern, about AD 1200 - 1950. The object is incomplete and is in four pieces; one main piece, two long strips and one small piece. The main piece is circular but folded at an acute angle along a curved line, making both faces elliptical. It was probably originally a cone or dome which has been distorted. The edge is incomplete, but has what appears to be a second layer in some places, perhaps originally forming a flange to attach the foil to a larger object, or to form a backplate. It is not obvious where the…

A copper alloy unidentified object of probable Medieval or Post Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1900. It is the terminal of a larger object, which is thin with a flat reverse and convex face. The terminal is a pointed oval, or spade shaped (similar in shape to an amphora shaped strap end but smaller), with a concave waist, expanding towards the broken end. The break is patinated but not worn. The complete end is covered with lumpy dark grey corrosion, perhaps the remains of a separate element on the reverse, as the coating appears to end in a step. The front surface edge is more gradua…

An incomplete unidentified copper alloy object. Its patina and decoration suggest a Roman or medieval date, although until its function can be ascertained this cannot be estimated with any confidence. The object has a length of 67.75mm, a maximum width of 11.32mm, and a maximum thickness of 5.34mm. It weighs 16.00g. The object tapers from its complete wider end (11.32mm) to its broken narrower end (7.92mm). One edge appears unbroken, the remaining three are broken. There is a central row of six punched dots running longitudinally. One possible identification might be that of a bracelet, although the very slight curvature of the fragment is not particularly consistent with this. Compare NMS-F457D2; an example which has been identified as 19th century and has similar punched dots. Nonethel…

An unidentified Iron artefact of unknown date. It is in the form of a narrow blade, that is flat on one side and slightly curved on the other side, resulting in a slight thickening in the centre of the blade. It tapers from the centre to a sharp point at one end and to what appears to be a cutting edge at the other, though the absence of any means of securing a haft probably means that it is not an axe and may be part of a larger piece of farming equipment. The artefact now shows the surface corrosion normal on iron artefacts. It is 162mm long, 48.6mm wide and 13.5mm thick. It weighs 303g..

A copper alloy artefact; a loop from a fragmentary larger object, of uncertain date, AD 43 - 1700. It is possibly a fragment of a hook from a sword belt fitting of post-medieval date, about AD 1500 - 1700. It consists of a short length of D-sectioned copper alloy, curved at one end into a loop where it is closed by a projecting transverse ridge on the inside of the loop. The other end curves in the opposite direction to the loop, but most of the remaining portion of the artefact has broken away at this point and is now missing.
