Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy unidentified object. The object is sub-rectangular with rounded ends and damaged edges. It is 30.8mm long, 11.7mm wide and 5.9mm thick at the lug. The plate is 1.7mm thick. It may have originally been an elongated lozenge shape, as some of the edge at the narrower end appears to be original and tapering. The original edge is also bevelled. The plate of metal is slightly bent making the front convex. The front is covered with diagonal striations which appear to be original, though may be a side effect of the construction process. These are interrupted by the patches of co…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead alloy object, probably a weight, of uncertain date. The object is a lop-sided cylinder which stands nicely on one end, though it was not necessarily intended to do so. There are some deep scratches on the sides and a central hole in each end. It is not certain whether the holes link up to perforate the object. It is 16.4mm long and has a diameter of 17mm. It weighs 23.1g or 0.8oz. Little is known about the function and provenance of these lead, weight-like objects. They may be connected to fishing, but there are many other possible uses.

Object type: HARNESS RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Rotherham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy harness ring of uncertain date. The ring is a sub-circular loop which is a rounded hexagon in section. It is 25.4mm long, 24.9mm wide and 3.6mm thick. At the narrower end of the loop the metal is much thinner and is worn, suggesting that the loop was suspended from this point. The exact function of the ring is uncertain; it may have been an attachment loop, a strap guide, or decorative. These objects are usually impossible to date as they have changed very little in the many centuries in which they were used.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Rotherham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead alloy probable perforated weight. The weight is cone shaped and has a circular hole through the centre. It appears to have been made in two pieces, first a hollow cone which was then filled with more lead leaving a line between the two pieces. There are two incised lines round the outside of the coin and possible cast decoration in the form of small vertical lines and hearts round the apex of the cone. At the top of the coin a small tube of lead extends; it is not clear whether this is part of a longer damaged tube, or whether damage to the cone has produced the tube. It is also…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Barnsley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead alloy probable standing conical weight. The weight is 23.6mm in diameter and 22.5mm thick. It weighs 51.6g. The cone shape has a flat base and a truncated top. There is a hole or circular indentation in the centre of the base which may go right through the weight, but the top is slightly squashed and it is impossible to be certain. There are diagonal scratches on the sides of the weight, and impressed marks on the base which may be deliberate stamps, but they are now unintelligible. The lead is light brown and white in colour. Lead weights are notoriously difficult to date and n…

A lead alloy probable weight. The object is conical, and has a hole running vertically through the centre. There are several old dents on the side and base, and a recent scrape. Lead weights are imperfectly understood and cannot normally the attributed to a specific period. It is hoped that increased recording and further study of these objects will allow better understanding in the future. This one weighs 98.2g, which is not far off three ounces. The hole through this example casts some doubt on its function as a standing weight, yet the hole seems too narrow to allow use as a spindle…

A possible lead alloy weight of unknown date. The object is a rounded rectangular shape with a narrowed centre, making it H shaped in section. The two ends are rounded, but the central shaft has straighter edges. The function of this object is not certain. It weighs 229g which is approximately 8 ounces. It is 30.4mm in diameter and is 27.4mm thick. Lead weights are imperfectly understood and cannot normally the attributed to a specific period. It is hoped that increased recording and further study of these objects will allow better understanding in the future. No parallel for this obje…

A lead alloy spindle whorl of unknown date. The whorl is biconvex with a large central hole. The surface is very pitted and rough. It has a diameter of 24.4mm and is 13.4mm thick. Helen Geake writes: "Dating of lead whorls is difficult. The drop spindle with which they were used continued in use until the end of the medieval period in London and Winchester (Egan, 1998, "The Medieval Household: Daily Living c1150 - c1450"; and Biddle, 1990, "Object and Economy in Medieval Winchester"), and for perhaps a century longer in Norfolk (Margeson, 1993, "Norwich Households: Medieval and Post M…

A lead alloy perforated weight, probably a medieval fishing weight. The weight is 58.2mm long, 20.3mm wide and 17.7mm thick. It weighs 68.3g. It is square with concave sides in section and tapers at both ends. One end extends into a simple oval suspension loop. The weight is deeply patinated and is a creamy white colour. Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as often as possible, a large body of data that can be studied will be built up.

A lead alloy object which is unidentified. The artifact is roughly cone shaped but with a rounded and faceted lower half and concave sides. The top is also rounded making the shape rather like a pear. The object has a diameter of 22.8mm and is 19.3mm thick. In the centre of the flat base is an irregular sub-triangular hole that extends about halfway into the centre of the object. The function of this object is unknown. It may be a weight and the hole could be to adjust the mass exactly. It could also have contained a copper alloy plug also for fine adjustment. Lead weights are very imp…

A copper alloy fragmentary mount of unknown date. The mount is roughly D shaped but at least one edge, the straight one, is broken. It is 28.3mm long, 19.8mm wide and 1.9mm thick. There is a rivet hole in the centre of the curved area and moulded decoration near the straight edge. Unfortunately not enough survives to be able to understand the design. Two curved lines each containing two rounded elements are visible. There is a curved notch in one end of the mount which interrupts the decoration but appears to be an original edge. The object has a smooth mid green patina. Its date canno…

A circular disc of stone which is carved on both sides and which is perforated at the edge. The object has a diameter of 57.1mm and is 22.3mm thick. The object’s date and function has not been identified. The stone is fine-grained micaceous sandstone (Stewart Ogilvy pers. comm.). It was found in North Wales about twenty five years ago. Both faces have a rounded channel carved into them. On both faces the channel starts at the hole which is drilled through the disc from the upper to the lower face. The channel then traces the edge of the disc, always at an equal distance to the edge, …
