A flint retouched blade of uncertain date, Mesolithic to early Bronze Age, 10000 BC - 1000 BC. It is formed on a patinated tertiary blade with large cream inclusions. It is sub-rectangular with convex side and a pointed distal end. There are parallel removals along the dorsal face. The right edge is damaged, but may have been retouched. A small area of undamaged retouch survives on the left side near the distal end. It is short, abrupt sub-parallel retuch. A flint probable knife of uncertain date, Mesolithic to early Bronze Age, 10000 BC - 1000 BC. It is a large tertiary flake of mottled light grey flint which is roughly rectangular, with the right distal corner curved and the left distal corner extending into a slight point. The curved right edge is retouched from the dorsal face with short, low-angle sub-parallel removals. The distal end has similar retouch, and the left side is retouched in the same way but from the ventral face. A waterworn and polished stone that may have been used as whetstone or hone stone, at an unknown date. The stone is broadly rectangular in pln and cross-section, though it is taller at one end, and that thcker end then tapers to a rounded point. The top and one side are flattened and there are faint striations, suggesting the stone may have been used. The other side is rougher and is probably natural. The base is smooth but undulating with some visible striations. The stone is fine textured and homogenous apart from the rougher face which has apparent inclusions of harder material that…

A copper alloy unidentified object of uncertain date, Roman to Modern, AD 43 - 1900. It is a disc which is flat on one face. It has rounded edges and the other face is shallowly conical. A slight scar at the apex could suggest that a shaft or attachment loop once extended here. There is no decoration. The patina is dark grey, chipped in places revealing a green core. It is 16.1mm diameter, 7.9mm thick and 7.5g. It has been suggested that this object is a Roman gaming piece, but it would not be an easy shape to pick up to move. It could also be a pin head, a button, a stud or the …

A sherd of a ceramic vessel of uncertain date, Roman to Medieval, AD 43 - 1500. It is a everted and clubbed rim sherd. The fabric is soft, irregular and is dark grey in the core and light brown on the surfaces. Grey patches on the outer face may be the remains of slip (suggesting a Medieval date), or could be mud. The inclsuiions are sparse and poorly sorted, and include possible sand and larger pink crystals (pink quartz?).

A flint retouched blade of uncertain date, Mesolithic to Bronze Age, 9000 BC - 1000 BC. It is formed on a thick blade of opaque dark grey cherty flint. The left edge has short, abrupt, sub-parallel retouch. The left side of the dorsal face has several removal scars at right angles to the blade, suggesting it is debitage that has been utilised. This is more typical of flints from the later Neolithic onwards. Though the blade is the right size for a Mesolithic group A microlith, the shape and working do not match. The object is 38.8mm long, 13mm wide and 6.4mm thick. 3.2g.

A copper alloy die of uncertain date, Roman to Post medieval, AD 43 - 1900. It is cuboid and the faces are marked with circular pits. The arrangement of the numbers is irregular, meaning the opposite faces do not add up to 7. Corrosion makes it difficult to accurately define the number of pits on each face. 1 is opposite a face which could be 4, 5 or 6. 2 is opposite a face which is 2-6. The remaining faces both appear to be 3, though one could be 5. The cube is 11.2mm by 10.6mm by 10.1mm. 8.4g. Geoff Egan (1997) notes that the "regular" layout (opposing sides totallin…

A copper alloy solid domed boss, perhaps part of a larger object, of unknown date, AD 43 - 1800. The wear to the broken edges and the patina suggest a date in the earlier end of this range, perhaps Roman. The object is a hemispherical dome which is solid. At the apex is a projecting bump of a different coloured and different alloy of copper alloy. It is dark red, rather than patinated to green. It may be an insert into the dome. On one edge, where more of the area surrounding the dome survives, there is a deep groove before a raised rim. the other edges are all broken nearer to th…

It is H shaped in cross-section. A small amount of orange ceramic vessel fabric survives in the groove. It is 18.6mm long, 11.5mm wide, 9.4mm thick and 9.1g. The upper face is gilded. the reverse is slightly hollow. It is 16.2mm long, 11.5mm wide and 4.4mm thick (rivet) and 1mm thick (plate). 0.7g. The pin head is a cube with the corners cut off and each of the four main faces is decorated with an incised border containing an incised cross saltire leaving a quatrefoil design in relief. This design also appears on the top face of the cube, but is untidy, with the lines of the cross extending beyond the border. One one face, there are traces of a silvery material filling the incised lines, probably niello. The shank is circular in section, solid and broken after just 3mm. There is a sligh…

An unidentified lead object of uncertain date, Roman to Post Medieval, about AD 43 - 1900, but perhaps more likely to be Post Medieval. The incomplete object is a pointed oval in plan. The front is convex and is moulded with a V shaped groove defining a triangular area at one end with concave sides creating a visual effect similar to a beetle opening its wings, like a depiction of a fly or like the bud of a flower. The "wings" of the fly are slightly proud. At what would be the stem end of a flower bud is a short, wide projection, moulded with two small domes next to each other. The o…

A fragment of a Medieval to Post Medieval copper alloy ring, with a flattened rounded sub-hexagonal cross section. The inner and outer edges are filed smooth. The ring would have originally been around 27mm in diameter when complete and was possibly part of a harness or strap fitting or part of a suspension chain. Measurements are; length 26.4mm, width 13.3mm, thickness 3.1mm and weight 3.06g. These are common detector finds, but their function and dating are not well understood (Geake, Finds Recording Guide, p. 54). See also https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecordingguides/r…

A cast lead probable suspended weight of unknown age, Roman to Post Medieval, about AD 43-1800. In plan the item is circular and rectangular in cross section with slightly concave faces. The appear to have a central iron rod passing through the weight, that may once have been a suspension loop, but the brown corrosion does not give a magnetic response, so is probably a brown patinated copper alloy. The body has a light grey patina. The mass of the piece does not comfortably correspond with known weight measurement systems, but if it also had a loop, it would have been heavier. It w…
