Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Bath and North East Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast copper alloy D-shaped frame that has thickened forward edge which is sub-triangular cross-section consisting of a narrowed leading edge that expands to the rear. The sides have a thick oval cross-section and arch round in a tight curve to the terminal. There is no evidence for a strap bar on the terminal suggesting that the buckle may have had a penannular frame.

A copper alloy bead of unknown date. The object is spherical with a semi-circular collar surrounding the aperture on both the top and bottom sides. The edges of the bead are decorated with a moulded decoration that runs around the circumferences and consists of alternating diagonal ridges with raised triangles in between. Numerous copper alloy beads have been recorded with a variety of date ranges suggested and are therefore difficult to date without a secure stratified context, and thus a wide date range has been suggested.

This is an undecorated lead conical spindle whorl with an off centre hole. Plain lead spindle whorls and weights were cast locally from the Roman period to the Post Medieval Period, therefore making them hard to date precisely.

Copper alloy ingot fragment that was originally circular in plan and plano-convex in profile. The forward edge is curved and follows the original profile of the item, from the curvature of this edge is estimated that the ingot may have originally had a diameter of between 14-19cm. The sides and rear edge have been cut resulting in them having a smooth vertical edge, presumably on order to divide up the metal into more manageable portions.

Unidentified terminal that is made from a semi-circular cross-section rod. The rod had an expanded waist that tapers to the narrow terminal, unfortunately on the opposite side although we can witness the sides begin to narrow after the waist, this end is now truncated. The remaining terminal is moulded into a large D-shaped projection, possibly to give the impression that the terminal has been bent back over itself. On the top edge is a shallow (1mm deep) U-shaped grove that runs the length of the item. The item has the look of a roman cosmetic grinder, however the shallow channel…

Copper alloy awl/point that is a long thin rod that has a square cross-section. The rod has an expanded waist which taped at both end to a point, however unfortunately one end is now truncated. The remaining side tapers to a fine point while the other side would most likely have had a flat terminal and acted like a tang the could have been inserted into a socket.
