Lead alloy spindle whorl diameter 28mm. Trapezoid shape in plan with a slightly off centre hole, eight knops are situated around the sides of the piece halfway down the slope. Helen Geake writes: “Dating of lead whorls is difficult. The drop spindle with which they were used continued in use until the end of the medieval period in London and Winchester (Egan, 1998, “The Medieval Household: Daily Living c1150 – c1450”; and Biddle, 1990, “Object and Economy in Medieval Winchester”), and for perhaps a century longer in Norfolk (Margeson, 1993, “Norwich Households: Medieval…

Decorated copper alloy plate length 23mm, width 14mm, thickness 1mm, weight 1.02g. This is a decorated fragment from an unknown object. the decoration is incised and consists of two ring and dot motifs at the top which flank two lines running down the centre, these have a series of crescent and dot in the top half. On the bottom section of the plate are two feathers. Beaded borders run down either side and point to the decoration continuing in all directions. This method of decoration is know from the Iron Age through to the Medieval Period, although Early Medieval maybe the most possible.

Gold pendant, circular with two suspension loops at top. On the front, a central pale blue stone within a border keyed for enamel, most of the enamel now missing and the design consequently indistinct. Traces of white and red enamel remain. The edges similarly keyed for enamel with scrolling foliage. The back is decorated with enamel white, green, black and red with a design of a bird in foliage. This pendant has been reassigned to me by the medieval and the modern curators in this Department. I cannot place it in my curatorial area and would suggest that it is either orien…

Silver ingot with a rectangular cross section, the sides and ends have been heavily hammered. The exact nature of this artefact is unknown. Although this object has been reported as treasure, it is undiagnostic and undateable. Therefore, because it is not possible to prove that it is more than 300 years old, it falls outside the definition of 1996 Treasure Act and has been disclaimed as non-treasure.

Copper alloy object length 32.5mm, width 46.5mm, thickness 31mm, weight over 60g. This appeasers to be a hollow leg. It is triangular in plan, the base of the leg shows considerable sign of wear. The outside surface is smooth with a rich green patina, while the inside surface is very rough and is suggestive of the lost wax process. It is possible that this maybe a fragment from a statue or ornament but it is not possible to be certain from this small fragment. Equally, a roman date is feasible but not possible to prove.
