Two copper alloy fragments, almost certainly part of the same object, of uncertain date and function, although stylistically possibly early medieval in date (c. 500-1100AD). The fragments appear to be from the same object, although they do not join.  They comprise a narrow sub-circular bar terminating in a zoomorphic head, possibly a lion or mythological beast.  The mouth of the animal forms a loop (broken in one example) that may have formed a suspension loop. Details on the heads have been picked out in incised grooves. The object bears similarities to modern Makara b…

A complete lead-alloy hanging weight dating from the Roman to Post Medieval period (43-1800 AD). In section the weight is broadly trapezoidal and is rectangular in plan. A hole has been punched through the apex to facilitate suspension. The sides of the object suggest that the lead has been folded into this shape rather than cast.  It has a powdery white patina. Measurements: Height: 29.1mm; width: 20.3mm; thickness: 13.4mm; weight: 42.79g.

A lead alloy possible steel-yard weight of unknown date.  Weights such as these were in use from Roman to the Post Medieval period (i.e. 43-1800AD). The object weight is sub-conical in shape.  The bottom has a roughly hexagonal indentation in the base. At the top of the weight there is a broken iron shaft protruding from the centre.  Iron within a lead alloy weight often occurs with steel yard weights. The weight has a powdery white/grey patina; the iron is corroded Measurements: Height: 45.5mm; Diameter: 34.0mm; Weight: 231g

Unidentified copper alloy object, possibly a brooch, of uncertain date (c. 200-1700 AD), although most likely to be of post-medieval date. The object appears to be complete. It is triangular in plan and sub triangular in section. It has the form of a stylised arrow head and appears to depict three “feathers” from the flight of an arrow. There is a short projection at the base of the object which could represent the shaft of an arrow. The three fins, that make up the apparent “feathers” are decorated with short parallel. The reverse of the object is plain but there is …

Unidentified lead object in the form of a human finger, of uncertain date, possibly Roman to Post-medieval. The object represents the tip of a human index finger cut off at the first knuckle with both the nail and cuticle clearly defined. The object has a pitted surface and a powdery white patina. The base of the object (furthest from the fingertip) suggests molten metal runs, rather than a break, adding weight to the suggestion that this is some form of casting waste. Length: 30mm; width: 18.1mm; thickness: 17.0mm; weight: 45.74g. There are a number of similar ex…

Unidentified object of unknown date. Copper alloy strip with three parallel grooves running the full length of the object on the outer face, and four on the inner face. These grooves appear to contain traces of black, or very dark blue, enamel. The upper edge of the object, and the two short ends, are smooth and slightly round and therefore appear to be a finished, undamaged edges. The long lower edge of the object, however, is slightly rough. It is unclear if this is a broken edge. If it is, the patination would suggest it is an old break. Both ends of the strip have been bent i…
