A group of 4 Prehistoric worked flint flakes , part of a larger assemblage of 43 peices of debitage, see also DEV-E95533, DEV-E7AD5A. Those flakes discussed here all exhibit some evidence of retouch. Flakes 1-3 are all from beach pebbles, similar to the rest of the assemblage.
1. A large secondary flake of pale grey flint with very frequent paler inclusions, dark flecks and a very large ferrous inclusion. Retaining cortex on c. 45% of its dorsal face, covering the majority of the right half of the face. The strking platform survives with a relatively diffuse, unscarred bulb of percussion. The flake exhibits short, semi-abrupt, sub-parallel, retouch at the proximal end of the left mesal edge.
Dimensions: length 51.5mm; width 27.6mm; thickness 11.9mm; weight 15.27g.
2. A secondary flake of a slightly translucent smokey-grey flint spotted with paler inclusions. Retaining cortex along its right mesal edge. A striking platform and relatively diffuse, unscarred bulb of percussion survive at the proximal end. A number of blade-like flake removal scars visible on the dorsal face, with one being hinged. A the proximal end of the left mesal edge the cortex has been worked away with sub-parallel to scalar, short, abrupt retouch.
Dimensions: length 36.9mm; width 22.4mm; thickness 5.3mm; weight 4.41g.
3. The distal end of an incomplete secondary flake, of a translucent pale brown flint with pale inclusions, retaining cortex on c. 60-70% of its dorsal face. The majroity of the flake is lost to a natural break. Short, scalar/stepped, semi-abrupt retouch to the distal edge.
Dimensions: length 18.2mm; width 35.0mm; thickness 11.30mm; weight 4.51g.
4. A Tertiary flake of a dark orange/brown flint not otherwise represented in the assemblage, with a glassier texture and potentially from a different source. A small, unscarred bulb of percussion survives at the proximal end with two removal scars on the dorsal face (the flake being flat in cross section). The flake has been worked bifacially, with the right edge of both the dorsal and ventral faces exhibiting short, semi-abrupt, sub-parallel retouch.
Dimensions: length 32.3mm; width 19.4mm; thickness 3.1mm; weight 1.80g.
The assemblage as a whole contains little diagnostic material, and waht little is is contradictory, with evidence for bladelet production as well as crude, irregular knapping and burnt flint. The poor quality of the raw material may have exaggerated the irregularity of the flint working, however it remains possible that multiple periods are represented and a broad date range is given.
