Fragment of thin gold sheet or foil, from an object of indeterminate use and date. The artefact comprises a flat, roughly D-shaped sheet, with a single neat straight edge. A crease follows the line of the straight edge about 2-3mm from it, forming a slight  groove or ridge along the edge. The rest of the object has hammer marks, probably from being beaten into its flat sheet form. Although the straight edge appears to have been neatly cut (or scored and folded until it broke), it is not clear if the straight edge is part of the form of the …

Copper alloy fragment of unidentified object of unknown purpose and date. The fragment appears to be a small piece of a circular container body or lid (estimated diameter 55mm), where it turns-down around the circumference to form the sides of the body or a rim (wall thickness 1.8mm). What would be the top appears to be very slightly domed. It is decorated on both surviving outside faces with raised oval pellets; the inside faces are smooth. All edges are broken and it has a rough light green patina with the pellets worn lighter. Unfortunately the fragment is too small t…

Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Large amorphous-shaped piece of copper alloy, possible casting waste. The waste does not contain any evidence of slag or mineral ore within it's surface contours and is not from a refining process. It has solidified unfettered from the molten state and may possibly be associated with casting or industrial activity hereabouts. No metallurgical investigation has been carried out and the object remains un-dateable. A good deal of similar material has been found in the plough-zone of the fields in the vicinity of this find and further information and context is discussed in the notes sect…

Copper alloy handmade nail of unknown date. The nail has a large sub-circular flat head from the nominal centre of which springs an integral square sectioned tapering prong. The flat head is set at an angle of approximately 25 degrees to the horizontal. The oblique angle appears to be by design and not the result of damage and this coupled with the copper alloy manufacture may suggest a specialist purpose such as ship building or a non-spark application. The nail has an even dark green patina indicative of age, and as a handmade example it would predate the industrial revolution.
