Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Northumberland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast lead-alloy steelyard weight dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410). The weight is roughly bi-conical in form consisting of two unequally sized upper and lower hemispheres with a rounded circumferential ridge between them. A copper alloy band of 4mm width surrounds the circumference. The bottom section is smaller, and the base has been flattened either during production or at a later date. There is a nipple at the top of the weight which has a copper alloy attachment protruding from it. This is probably a flattened suspension loop.
