Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A conical cast lead alloy weight of uncertain date with flat base, tapering slightly faceted sides and a circular hole through the centre from top to base. The central perforation measures 4.6mm at the top to 6.4mm at the base. The height is 34.2mm, diameter 28.2mm at the bottom. It weighs 110.3 grams. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards for a wide variety of uses and are hard to date precisely although most are late Medieval - Post Medieval

Cast lead item, probably a one off item made locally to meet a specific need. It has an expanded flattened roughly circular 'head' at one end which is 35.6mm in diameter. Projecting from the back of the head is a large lug with two straight sides alternating with convex curved sides and a rounded end. Through the lug from straight side to straight side is a hole, circular at one end and oval at the other. It is 34.8mm long and weighs 118.8 grams. Such items are hard to date or identify, one suggestion is that, as a parallel to lead vessel repairs such as SOM-6E8BB6 it would be …

56 pieces of burnt clay of total weight 800 grams, possibly from an oven of uncertain date. The clay is amorphous with only a few voids from organic inclusions or imprints as one sees on daub. There is no evidence of layering as one might expect in a kiln, furnace or cob. Occasional small rounded iron stone inclusions and very small chalk or limestone inclusions almost certainly reflect natural inclusons in the clay rather than temper. The pieces are all amorphous and friable with angluar fractures on all faces. Only two have small areas of surface, smoothed but poorly finished with c…

Dark blue glass bead of uncertain date. The bead is sub-oval in plan with one rounded end and one more conical end, and circular in section. It has a rough sided hole 2.5mm in diameter running though it. It is 11.9mm long and 9.6mm in diameter and weighs 1.68 grams. Irregularity in the shape and the number of air bubbles suggest it was made by being wound on a pontil. Although cobalt blue beads were popular in the later Iron Age and Roman period, those examples are usually more globular, wider in diameter than they are long. Guido (1978:70) comments that stray examples of such beads…

Cast lead weight in the shape of a truncated square based pyramid. The sides are upright at first then change direction with a distict carination to slope inwards to the flat top. It is plain with no decoration. There is an indent in one side which may be mis-casting or damage. It is 28.9 by 28.4mm at the base and 10.3mm tall, it weighs 49.68 grams. Roman and Medieval sub-pyramidal weights are catalogued in Biggs and Withers (2000:27-29) but all the examples have raised cast designs, a larger central square and much more steeply sloped sides than this example. Cast copper-alloy ring with a hexagonal section. It has flat sides and points at the centre of the inner and outer edges. The points are worn in places and rounded and in others are more pronounced, possibly form mis-alignment of the mould in casting. It is 27.4mm in external diameter, 3.8mm wide by 3.1mm thick and weighs 4.80 grams. Such rings are very hard to date and had a variety of uses, most are suspension rings of some form from straps and harnesses. Geake (2001, 74) suggested rings of this type are medieval or post-medieval harness ring.

Fragment iof a cast copper alloy item, possibly a buckle frame. The fragment is of a flat, rectangular sectioned strip which is slightly curved in plan with old breaks at either end. It is 16.4mm long, 6.1mm wide and 1.7mm thick; it weighs 0.93 grams. Such a small fragment is hard to identify with any certainty but the design may suggest a Roman to Medieval date.
