A cast lead sub-spherical object with a flattened 'base' and cylindrical stem projecting from the top. There are clear castng lines running down opposite sides of the sphere and multiple slight facets on the stem and transverse lines running around the stem, possibly from being tidied with a knife. The piece is 27.3mm in diameter 31.7mm tall, 22.8mm excluding the 'stem' and weighs 115.91g, almost exactly 4 ounces. The form of th piece is hard to parallel and appears similar to shot, althoguh too small for cannon and too large for musket. It could be used as part of grape sho…

Lead piriform (drop shaped) weight of uncertain, Roman- Post Medieval date. The weight is circular in cross section with a conical upper part and hemispherical base with a slightly flattened lower surface allowing it to sit upright. At the top point it extends up into a globular perminal which appears bent over to one side and possibly truncated at the top. The weight could be suspended from the groove between the main weight and this globular terminal . The upper, conical, part of the main weigt is decorated with eight incised grooves running around it, the upper four in a spiral the…

Lead spindle whorl or weight. The object is plano-convex and sub-circular with a flat base, domed top and an irregular oval outline. There is a circular hole through the centre, top to botton 8.1mm in diameter. The entire piece is 25.2mm by 22.4mm and 10.9mm thick and weighs 20.64g. While lead spindle whorls are known from the late Early Medieval onwards, and the central hole is sufficiently large for this use, the irregular outline of this example, which would make the turn uneven, suggest it is more likely to be a weight. Lead weights were often homemade for weighing down a varie…

A cast lead weight or possibly spindle whorl. It is circular and has a slightly domed top and bottom and convex sides giving it an oval cross section. There is a oval hole runing through the centre and seven evenly spaced grooves running down the sides. It is 17.8mm in diameter, 8.8mm thick and weights 9.35g, the hole is 6.3 by 5.5mm across. Plain spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are hard to date precisely although most are late Medieval - Post Medieval.

Cast lead alloy weight, probably of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. The weight is a truncated cone with a sub-circular flat base from which the sides taper inwards to the flattened round topped terminal. The sides are slightly angular with four convex sides meeting in rounded corners. The terminal has a circular piercing through it for suspension. There is an irregularly shaped off centre indentation on the base, either a casting flaw or damage. The weight measures 30.9mm high, 24.4mm in diameter at the base and weighs 70.50 grams. Lead weights were used for a long period and lack…

Flat, slightly oval lead weight with lumps of another material, stone or copper alloy set into each side. The weight is 26.7mm by 24.3mm and 10.2mm thick; 8.4mm excluding the inset material. It weighs 42.46 grams. Lead weights in copper alloy casings are known from the 11th - 12th century, e.g. HAMP-EEBC91 but the material on this example appears to be set it. Other lead weights with copper alloys set into them are known but these have an item on one side only and it is always a decorative piece of copper alloy. It is not clear if the material in this case was incorporated deliberat…

Cast lead weight in the shape of a truncated square based pyramid. The sides are upright at first then change direction with a distict carination to slope inwards to the flat top. It is plain with no decoration. There is an indent in one side which may be mis-casting or damage. It is 28.9 by 28.4mm at the base and 10.3mm tall, it weighs 49.68 grams. Roman and Medieval sub-pyramidal weights are catalogued in Biggs and Withers (2000:27-29) but all the examples have raised cast designs, a larger central square and much more steeply sloped sides than this example. Plain lead weights wer…
