One fragment of worn, sub-angular translucent crystalline calcite with flat cleavage planes visible on three axis and worn, smoothed, sides. Probably naturally formed: no evidence seen for artificial shaping. 29.1mm by 28.3mm by 20.2mm and 24.39g in weight. Although natural and potentially local as calcite does form in limestone the piece was picted out by the finder as unusual in the field. It was found in an area that has produced worked flint of Mesolithic to Bronze Age dte with a focus in the Neolithic and might be associated with the flint as a deliberately selected and…

A cast lead sub-spherical object with a flattened 'base' and cylindrical stem projecting from the top. There are clear castng lines running down opposite sides of the sphere and multiple slight facets on the stem and transverse lines running around the stem, possibly from being tidied with a knife. The piece is 27.3mm in diameter 31.7mm tall, 22.8mm excluding the 'stem' and weighs 115.91g, almost exactly 4 ounces. The form of th piece is hard to parallel and appears similar to shot, althoguh too small for cannon and too large for musket. It could be used as part of grape sho…

A cast lead or lead-alloy spindle whorl or possibly weight. It is plano-convex with a flat base, vertical sides and slightly convex top with a circular hole running through from top to bottom near the centre. The hole is slightly off set from the centre but that might be due to damage down that edge which is also thinner. It is 29.7mm in diameter at the base, 12.4mm thick and weighs 49.76g; the hole is 7.8mm in diameter. Plain spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and such plain and rough examples are hard to date precisely althou…

Four copper alloy rings found together as a group in context. There are two larger and two smaller rings. One of the larger rings is broken and incomplete. One of the smaller rings is also incomplete and has part of an iron object still attached and iron corrosion adhering to the others suggests they were also linked by iron pieces. Ring 1: Lozenge shaped in cross section with clear fold lines around the central ridge on the inner side of the ring and file marks on the inner face from forming. No very worn areas but it appears to thin towards one side where there is an piece of …

The projection to one side starts a similar, although slightly thicker rectangular cross sectioned bar before ending in a squared off ends with a much thinner piece continuing backwards and curled under. Roman or post medieval copper alloy ring, probably a finger ring with broken hoop and thick bezel. The hoop varies, thinning from a rectangular to a flat cross section on one side of the bezel and oval in cross section on the other. Part of this may be distortion caused when the hoop was bent and broken. The bezel is broadly rectangular with semi-circular ends flanked by rounded knops in each corner. It thickens towards the centre and is notably more thick near the base than the top where there is a flat edge with a step in thickness part way back. There are extensive file marks acros…

Description: A fragment from a gold bar shaped ingot with a sub-oval cross section that has flattened upper and lower faces and convex sides. At each end the piece has been hammered top and bottom to thin it. It has then been broken leaving a hackled irregular break at each end. One break shows more clearly the multiple marks from thinning and has also become wider as it was thinned. There are several scratches to the surface in addition to pitting and marks from abrasion. Part of the mouth of a socket from an unidentified object, possibly a Bronze Age axe or hammer, possibly a Medieval staff or similar. Only part of two sides remain and the corner between them so the full dimensions of the socket are unclear. All the breaks are old and patinated. The socket appears to have been square in section with slightly convex sides. The inside is smooth with a slightly white metakl sheen, probably from tin. The outerside is more corroded with a pitted green surface. At the mouth is a slight lip which projects more in places and maybe a cleaned casting flash. …

Lead spindle whorl or weight. The object is plano-convex and sub-circular with a flat base, domed top and an irregular oval outline. There is a circular hole through the centre, top to botton 8.1mm in diameter. The entire piece is 25.2mm by 22.4mm and 10.9mm thick and weighs 20.64g. While lead spindle whorls are known from the late Early Medieval onwards, and the central hole is sufficiently large for this use, the irregular outline of this example, which would make the turn uneven, suggest it is more likely to be a weight. Lead weights were often homemade for weighing down a varie…
