A group of three 'natural' stones which are recorded as they are part of a larger assemblage of material. 1. A large irregular sub oval shaped heavily water worn mudstone nodule with a series of irregular pits within the fabric. The exterior is weathered and originally (given its size and light weight) it was throught it may possibly be burnt daub or represent some form of ceramic building material. The artefact has been examined beneath a microscope and not form of fabric or inclusions can be identified - it is therefore suggested that this represent natural mudstone. There is no …

A large broadly triangular piece of iron of uncertain function or date. The iron fragment is hammer worked and is broadly D shaped in cross section. It is pierced in four places - at the apex, twice on the base and singly at the midpoint. The surface is irregular and the reverse face has several areas of spalling and corrosion. The artefact is recorded due to the upper surface seeming to have a series of interlaced designs along the midpoint / spine. This interpretation is uncertain due to condition. Given the form and shape it is possible that this is from a decorative hinge from eit…

An irregular fragment of cast copper alloy plate of uncertain date. The fragment is broadly rectangular in plan and cross section. All edges are heavily eroded and abraded; they do not represent the original edges. The upper surface has a poorly preserved cast pattern comprising radiating elements between oval lentoid open loops. It has a deep green coloured surface patina. A direct parallel has not been found although it is highly likely that it is from the rim of a decorated metal dish - possibly a chafing dish of later medieval date (AD 1200 - 1600). The fragment measures: 33.…

A cast copper composite fragment of uncertain function and date - most probably associated with a copper alloy spoon or knife of post medieval date. The artefact comprises a tapering stem broken at one end and terminating in a bulbous corroded head at the other. Positioned half-way along the tapering shaft is a rectangular block very similar to a post medieval knife cap. It is suggested that the tang would have been set within a wooden handle and surmounted by a knife terminal - the bulbous corroded element could be the remains of an external knop similar to that seen on apostle spoon…

Large hand wrought iron nail with a large boss like square shaped head with a distinctive D shaped cross section. The shank of the nail is square and broken. The surface of the nail suffers from active laminating corrosion. A direct parallel has not been found, but the shear size suggests that it was not for domestic furniture, instead it is suggested that it might be an iron nail from a studded timber door, or possibly from a boat. A date is also difficult to suggest - it is possibly ancient but as it is hand made it could date from as late as 1900. The iron nail measures, 50.3mm …

A cast copper alloy ring of unknown date, most probably medieval (1250-1600). The function of the ring is unknown, given its size, wear and distortion it is most likely to be from a harness fitting.
