County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete cast copper alloy hammer or possibly small anvil of unknown - probably post medieval, date. The body of the hammer comprises of a cylindrical shape which tapers at both ends - one into a wedge shape the opposite into a four sided point. The remains of an iron riod extends from one face and it is at this point that one egde is wide than the other. A direct paralell has not been found but given the method of manufacture and also the patina it is most likely to post medieval (1500-1800)
The artefact measures 81.5mm length, 31.5mm width and is 28.0mm thick; the iron rod has …

A complex cast copper alloy artefact of uncertain function and date. The artefact comprises an openwork oval shaped cage surmounted by a bulbous knop which is pierced by a transverse oval shaped hole. The artefact is cast in a single piece and the openwork cage consists of four evenly spaced arms aligned vertically that enclose an oval shaped space c. 16.3mm diameter and 15.2mm high. Where the arms meet on the lower edge a flat oval shaped disc is formed - this is pierced by a rectangular hole (3.6mm x 2.4mm). On the upper edge a thickened sub rectangular domed knop or boss extends me…

A cast leaded copper alloy fitting of uncertain function and date. It is broken into two parts although the two ends conjoin to form a single broken artefact. The fitting is broadly rectangular in plan - although it is much distorted in plan and profile. At the centre of one of the broken parts a rectangular lozenge headed element extends. It is uncertain if this is functional or decorative. There are no drilled holes or fixing points present; likewise there is no applied or incised decoration. The metal is a mid-grey green colour with a corroded surface patina. A direct parallel ha…

An irregular fragment of cast copper alloy plate of uncertain date. The fragment is broadly rectangular in plan and cross section. All edges are heavily eroded and abraded; they do not represent the original edges. The upper surface has a poorly preserved cast pattern comprising radiating elements between oval lentoid open loops. It has a deep green coloured surface patina. A direct parallel has not been found although it is highly likely that it is from the rim of a decorated metal dish - possibly a chafing dish of later medieval date (AD 1200 - 1600).
The fragment measures: 33.…

A small square shaped gold coloured possibly gold (and copper) alloyed piece of casting waste / manufacturing offcut from thick sheet / ingot of uncertain date. The metal is flat and rectangular in section; one edge has a very slight bevel to it whilst the other three have cut edges. Theer is no sign of saw marks and it looks to have been cut with a cold chisel - or been snapped. Two of the cut edges have a slightly corroded surface whilst the upper and lower ones have small pit marks. No obvious nick marks or cutting can be seen on any surface and the form of the ingot is not diagnos…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy ring of probable later Iron Age or Roman date (200 BC - 400 AD). The ring is broadly circular in plan and sub-oval in cross section. The ring is a mid brown colour with a well developed patina which covers all surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. There are no obvious wear facets on the internal surfaces. The use of this ring is difficult to interpret. The most likely functional use is as a harness (probably strap union) fitting. No clear parallels have been found for this artefact; it has been dated solely on the design, weight of the met…

A cast copper composite fragment of uncertain function and date - most probably associated with a copper alloy spoon or knife of post medieval date. The artefact comprises a tapering stem broken at one end and terminating in a bulbous corroded head at the other. Positioned half-way along the tapering shaft is a rectangular block very similar to a post medieval knife cap. It is suggested that the tang would have been set within a wooden handle and surmounted by a knife terminal - the bulbous corroded element could be the remains of an external knop similar to that seen on apostle spoon…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy ring of unknown date, most probably medieval (1250-1600). The function of the ring is unknown, given its size, wear and distortion it is most likely to be from a harness fitting. The ring is oval in plan and has a distinct angular sub-triangular cross section. The width of the ring is relatively uniform. There is no decoration on either the outer or inner surfaces. The internal edge of the ring is worn suggesting that it may have been a belt ring used to tighten or secure a leather strap; being so slight it is possibly part of personal dress. The ring has a well pr…

It is broken at one end and other terminates in a rounded point. There is no cast or incised surface decoration and the artefact has a thick green surface patina which is slightly corroded and abraded. The curve in the profile is due to recent movement in the ploughsoil. Lateral surface cracking is present due to stress fracturing. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy fragment of uncertain function and date. The fragment most resembles a small multi-platformed terret ring / harness ring of later Iron Age or early Roman date (50 BC - AD 200). It is most likely to be a mis-cast example and possibly never finished for functional use. The fitting is formed with a sub-triangular incomplete ring which expands to form two oval shaped platformed projections. One of these projections has a length or rectangular sectioned iron embedded within. Both platforms have small beaded collars around their external edge. Both external edges of the…

Cast copper alloy ring of probable Roman - Modern date (50 - 1800). The ring is circular in plan and lentoid (hexagonal) in cross section. There are traces of irregular file marks on several surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. A slight thickening of the ring is present on one edge - this maybe remains of a casting jet. The ring is oval in shape due to distortion and has wear facets on internal surfaces from use. The ring is a dark - mid greenish grey colour with a well developed patina which covers all surfaces. The patination of the metal would suggest a…

Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete piece of copper alloy (bronze) casting waste of uncertain date; most probably Roman (AD50-350). However, due to the lack of context and the continuation of casting styles this artefact could be dated from Iron Age - Medieval period (c. 800 BC - AD 1500). This fragment is from the neck (funnel / well) of a composite probably two part mould. The casting waste is broadly dished in shape with the remains of two oval jets emanating from the lower part. Both of these jets have been cut horizontally with a pair of shears or crimpers rather than being cut with a knife or broken …

Object type: COIN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A heavily worn and eroded copper alloy coin of either later Roman or post-medieval date. The uncertanity of dating is due to the small size and roundness of the coin. Although it has a similar patina to other Roman coins discovered in the immediate area - it has the potential for being a coin of the 17th century - such as a copper alloy 'Richmond Round of James I or Charles I. The coin is too heavily eroded to identify further.
