A complex cast copper alloy artefact of uncertain function and date. The artefact comprises an openwork oval shaped cage surmounted by a bulbous knop which is pierced by a transverse oval shaped hole. The artefact is cast in a single piece and the openwork cage consists of four evenly spaced arms aligned vertically that enclose an oval shaped space c. 16.3mm diameter and 15.2mm high. Where the arms meet on the lower edge a flat oval shaped disc is formed - this is pierced by a rectangular hole (3.6mm x 2.4mm). On the upper edge a thickened sub rectangular domed knop or boss extends me…

A group of three 'natural' stones which are recorded as they are part of a larger assemblage of material. 1. A large irregular sub oval shaped heavily water worn mudstone nodule with a series of irregular pits within the fabric. The exterior is weathered and originally (given its size and light weight) it was throught it may possibly be burnt daub or represent some form of ceramic building material. The artefact has been examined beneath a microscope and not form of fabric or inclusions can be identified - it is therefore suggested that this represent natural mudstone. There is no …

A large broadly triangular piece of iron of uncertain function or date. The iron fragment is hammer worked and is broadly D shaped in cross section. It is pierced in four places - at the apex, twice on the base and singly at the midpoint. The surface is irregular and the reverse face has several areas of spalling and corrosion. The artefact is recorded due to the upper surface seeming to have a series of interlaced designs along the midpoint / spine. This interpretation is uncertain due to condition. Given the form and shape it is possible that this is from a decorative hinge from eit…

A cast leaded copper alloy fitting of uncertain function and date. It is broken into two parts although the two ends conjoin to form a single broken artefact. The fitting is broadly rectangular in plan - although it is much distorted in plan and profile. At the centre of one of the broken parts a rectangular lozenge headed element extends. It is uncertain if this is functional or decorative. There are no drilled holes or fixing points present; likewise there is no applied or incised decoration. The metal is a mid-grey green colour with a corroded surface patina. A direct parallel ha…

A small square shaped gold coloured possibly gold (and copper) alloyed piece of casting waste / manufacturing offcut from thick sheet / ingot of uncertain date. The metal is flat and rectangular in section; one edge has a very slight bevel to it whilst the other three have cut edges. Theer is no sign of saw marks and it looks to have been cut with a cold chisel - or been snapped. Two of the cut edges have a slightly corroded surface whilst the upper and lower ones have small pit marks. No obvious nick marks or cutting can be seen on any surface and the form of the ingot is not diagnos…

It is also thicker than conventional medieval and post medieval struck / hammered coins (based on its relevant size). Therefore, it is possibly a debased Roman coin of some sort. It has been found close to an area of Roman denarii Diameter: 17.5mm Thickness 1.0mm Weight 1.16 grams

Cast copper alloy ring of probable later Iron Age or Roman date (200 BC - 400 AD). The ring is broadly circular in plan and sub-oval in cross section. The ring is a mid brown colour with a well developed patina which covers all surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. There are no obvious wear facets on the internal surfaces. The use of this ring is difficult to interpret. The most likely functional use is as a harness (probably strap union) fitting. A cast copper composite fragment of uncertain function and date - most probably associated with a copper alloy spoon or knife of post medieval date. The artefact comprises a tapering stem broken at one end and terminating in a bulbous corroded head at the other. Positioned half-way along the tapering shaft is a rectangular block very similar to a post medieval knife cap. It is suggested that the tang would have been set within a wooden handle and surmounted by a knife terminal - the bulbous corroded element could be the remains of an external knop similar to that seen on apostle spoon…

Large hand wrought iron nail with a large boss like square shaped head with a distinctive D shaped cross section. The shank of the nail is square and broken. The surface of the nail suffers from active laminating corrosion. A direct parallel has not been found, but the shear size suggests that it was not for domestic furniture, instead it is suggested that it might be an iron nail from a studded timber door, or possibly from a boat. A date is also difficult to suggest - it is possibly ancient but as it is hand made it could date from as late as 1900. The iron nail measures, 50.3mm …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete piece of copper alloy (bronze) casting waste of uncertain date; most probably Roman (AD50-350). However, due to the lack of context and the continuation of casting styles this artefact could be dated from Iron Age - Medieval period (c. 800 BC - AD 1500). This fragment is from the neck (funnel / well) of a composite probably two part mould. The casting waste is broadly dished in shape with the remains of two oval jets emanating from the lower part. Both of these jets have been cut horizontally with a pair of shears or crimpers rather than being cut with a knife or broken …

The central hole is broadly circular and has been cast / set slightly off centre. The diameter of the hole measures 7.6mm and it is chocked with lead and clay - suggesting that this whorl was miscast and never used / finished. The upper and lower faces are undecorated.…
