A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD1 - 1650), most probably later medieval (AD1150-1600).
In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular and in profile is bi-convex. There is a central sub-circular perforation which measures 8.51mm in diameter. The perforation is irregular in shape possibly due to wear. One face of the whorl has a raised circumferential rib. There is also the remains of raised ribs and possibly pellets as seen on other examples, such as (HESH-4FCB15) discovered in Cheshire East. Although the decoration on this example is now very w…

A complete cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD 43 - 1650). In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular and in profile is bi-conical. Both faces have a raised outer rim. The central perforation measures 9mm and is centrally located. The decoration on one of the faces comprises of eight circular raised pellets that are placed circumferentially. An incomplete cast lead alloy zoomorphic mount or figurine in the form of a stylised fish or dolphin. The figure consists of the head facing right with a slightly rounded open mouth. The upper part of the jaw is thicker and more prominent than the lower half. The figure has a large eye consisting of an oval shaped pellet set in an oval shaped groove. The body of the figurine has an arched back which curves and tapers to a broken terminal. Other examples on the database suggest that the body would have then terminated in a forked tail.
