Copper alloy disc. A small cast flat-sided disc, probably cut to its final shape, with a central drilled hole of diameter 2mm, surrounded on one side by four symmetrically disposed blind pits of slightly smaller diameter. This might have functioned as a mount, or perhaps as the separate head of a pin. A range of flat mounts is reported from medieval London and many remain attached to belts, though the ‘decorative’ scheme is odd here and the central fixing point excessively wide, and few medieval mounts are as chunky and simple in form (Egan and Pritchard 1991). The range of…

Lead weight. A small solid cast weight of unusual form, appearing as four conjoined spheres with a pair of moulded ribs between each neighbouring pair, a flat base, and a conical point at its top, probably formerly the site of a loop. Patinated overall, degraded at top and base, the former also broken. The suspected provision for suspension might point to use with a miniature steelyard beam. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-850 Height: 21mm, Width: 17.3mm, Thickness: 16.8mm, Weight: 20.68gms

Copper alloy probable mount fragment fragment. A keeled concavo-convex straight-sided strip has a hollow straight-sided gully on its back and a keeled display side, with a plain rectangular block set at its midpoint. One collared terminal enjoys partial survival in sub-triangular form at one end, with curved outer edges in so far as they survive and retains indistinct or degraded decoration near the collar. Copper alloy metalworking debris. A fragment made by the twisting of two strands of a probably square -section [c.3.5mm square] strip of copper alloy together. The twist is hammered at one end, while its component strands protrude in open curls at the other. Copper alloy metalworking debris. An oval fragment of solidified copper alloy melt of plano-convex section, possibly from the casting ingate at the top of the mould used for casting a small object. The oval flat surface would represent the upper side with shrinkage lines resulting from the cooling of molten metal. The ingate would be broken from the object cast and was presumably intended to go back into the melting pot. This is an unusual example of metalworking debris whose form places it at a particular stage of the casting process, rather than the more common evidence for spillage.…

Lead pencil. Cast rhomboid or square-section rod, rounded at one end and with a tapered cast point at the other, now bent and patinated. Lead dry-points or scribes are known from medieval contexts, in the case of a group from Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, especially from construction horizons where building waste may have provided the material for marking or recording tools used on site (Foreman, in Armstrong et. al.1991, 156-157, fig. 118 nos 711-729). There may be a broader significance in the implication of functional literacy in early times – the limited knowledge of en…

Lead weight. Cast cylindrical lead weight, the regular form indicating it was cast in a closed mould, patinated. The metal retains a greyish tint suggesting a relatively recent date. The mass initially suggested a possible correspondence with Viking-Age units of measurement with a possible value of two ora/ore [the contemporary and underweight version of an ounce] but the surface condition and construction may both argue against such an early date while the correspondence with round numbers of such units is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter. Suggeste…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 7mm, Walton Rogers form A1, patinated; recent gouge on upper side represents a possibly distorting impact, perhaps at the time of discovery. Reddish-buff fine grained micaceous or glittering Sandstone fragment, possibly broken from a stone roof tile; all edges broken. The finder kindly notes marks on both flat sides: on the greyer side these comprise a long cross with rays projecting from its angles beside its longer bar; a similar cross with a single supplementary stroke appears on the redder side as well. The dating and significance of the markings is very uncertain, though the use of stone roof tiles might be expected from the Roman period onwards, their supply presumably depending on transport along the River Trent. Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. A small segment of a tubular object of estimated original diameter c.20mm, broken along both its sides and at one end. Polished by wear on its outer side. This might be from a small container such as a medieval or later needle case, or from some other tubular object –  objects of this general form and size have been identified as the ramrod holders for muskets. Lead weight. Cast sub-conical weight with a possible blind pit set centrally in its base; patinated and unusually degraded surface. The conical form is, as often, slightly offset to one side, and the wall may have been lightly fluted, though if so, this was lost to its subsequent deterioration. Lead weight. Cast sub-conical flat-based weight with a slightly concave tapered form and a rounded top. Patinated. This object resembles larger objects of bobbin or ‘cotton reel’ forms from Roman sites though a medieval date is also often advanced for weights of conical forms. The shrinkage of the centre of the base may suggest this object was cast in an open mould, broad end uppermost. Lead spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 9.5mm, Walton Rogers form B. The upper side as cast bears a moulded pattern of either thin crossing radial lines or chevrons. Patinated. The decoration of whorls is very occasionally noted for earlier periods but is almost a diagnostic trait of later whorls. The spindle hole size could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian or later date while the mass would be apt to spinning a yarn. Dark brown flint nodule with cortex, scraper. A round flint pebble or nodule of high quality, with invasive angled scalar retouch which has removed eight large long and mostly parallel flakes in an episode of skilled and perfunctory working from a single direction. The cutting edge produced has seen some use as evidenced by its light battering. The rapid removal of larger flakes might usually suggest a late date; however, the selection of this material, which is imported to the area, might rather point to an earlier date and to its economical rather than haphazard working. The notable …

Copper alloy and silver metalworking debris. A cast wedge-shaped object with a thin flap of copper alloy folded back against one side, with patches of silvery white metal and black areas on either side. It appears the thin flap was folded after the silvery metal had accumulated. This may alternatively be a part-melted or recycled object, perhaps one which had been plated. Had the white metal not appeared, this might have been taken for a vessel foot of similarly indeterminate date – albeit sooting is absent.
