Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible hooked tag. Small cast tapered D-section shank, broken at its narrower end near the site of a curve, and expanded to triangular form at the other end. This now appears to resemble a crowned King’s head with brow and nose, as kindly observed by the finder, though a spiky crown may in part be formed by two juxtaposed drilled attachment holes across which the object appears to have broken. This may suggest the decoration to have been of originally zoomorphic rather than anthropomorphic style, and perhaps unrelated to the late medieval King’s head motif. S…

Gold metalworking debris. A small plano-convex pellet of solidified gold melt which has set on a flat smooth surface. A reddish tint suggests a significant presence of copper in the metal mix, making this a rose gold. Lead offcut. A sub-rectangular fragment of cast lead sheet of structural gauge, with knife-cut upper and lower long edges, one partly folded and hammered flat; patinated overall and folded. Reported with another scrap of lead. Patinated. The possible edge of a fixing hole – perhaps formed by the shank of a handmade iron nail – appears at one end. Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 9.5mm with a prominent flattened circumferential rim , patinated and abraded. While the spindle hole size and indeed the surface condition may point to an Anglo-Scandinavian or later date, the form might point to this being a homemade copy using one half of a biconical whorl to form a mould. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Post-Medieval, 850-1600 Diameter: 29.3mm, Thickness: 10.8mm, Weight: 41.20gms

Copper alloy probable buckle. Cast asymmetrical sub-rectangular double looped buckle frame with an ornately moulded and expanded outer loop bearing complex zoomorphic or vegetal motifs, with small fronds extending to overlap the smaller rectangular inner loop. The flat underside of the outer edge bears multiple drilled pits of which only one or two are carried through the object, the others being shallow and blind, as if an openwork scheme had been attempted but abandoned. Initially a post-medieval date was considered on the basis of the form, but the reddish tint of metal and the deco…

Lead possible weight. Cast oval plano-convex object, pierced with a possibly drilled hole on the site of a short cut at its edge, and with a broad cut across its flat surface; patinated. This might have been cast from scrap as a tiny ingot as the underside is rough and perhaps sanded but the hole suggests it was then put to some suspended use. Improvised use – perhaps for only a single operation – as a palm guard might equally be entertained. Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast discoid cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.8mm, cf. Walton Rogers form B. One side bears a possibly decorative scheme of indistinct shapes to either side of a gutter round the central hole. This might alternatively be the fortuitous result of shrinkage from casting in an open mould. The metal retains a grey tint which might argue against identification as a whorl, and perhaps in favour of a use as a much more recent fishing line weight. Suggested date: Unknown, Post-Medieval to Modern, 1500-1950 Diameter: 26.2mm, Thicknes…

Copper alloy mount. Cast heart-shaped lightly concavo-convex plate with a central vertically incised line on it display side and a short [1.8mm] lug on the back. One lobe of the heart is lost, perhaps due to mis-casting rather than damage. The overall form and an integral attachment spike would usually suggest a post-medieval date, but the lug here may be complete. The condition might also permit an earlier date; Roman military equipment included various heart-shaped mounts and pendants. Lead ingot. Cast discoid plano-convex ingot, formed by pouring molten led into a shallow bowl-shaped hollow, or possibly into the base of a vessel with a curved base. Patinated. The appearance of imprints from a finely sanded surface may suggest this to be from tidying up after an episode of formal lead working, where a casting bed would be used. The surface of the object as cast is irregular, probably due to the cooling process as the metal congealed. Similar objects come from Early Medieval and Medieval contexts – one from a 10th-century context Beverley, Lurk Lane, was associa…

Lead weight. Small cast sub-conical weight with a longitudinal possibly pierced aperture of 5-3.5mm width. Three tiny sharp flanges project from the base and appear alongside what appears as tiny slits. Patinated overall. The finder kindly suggests a function as a line weight, which appears apt. These are usually ascribed to the medieval period, but a pot mend from the same site bears exactly the same surface patina and was ascribed to the Roman period. Ceramic building material, possible hearth, kiln or oven fragment. A fragment of indurated heated clay, reddened on its upper side where rare calcareous inclusions to length 7mm appear, and a darker brown below this, with zones on the lower part appearing like the cancellous tissue within bone – whether this hints at the inclusion of bone fragments in a clay groundmass or is an effect on the clay arising from intense heat is uncertain. This object may be from the surface of a hearth made of puddled clay, or from the domed wall or lining of an oven or kiln. Suggested date: Unknown…
